Synopsis:

Bombay, 1921. Intrepid and intelligent, young Perveen Mistry joins her father’s prestigious law firm to become one of India’s first female lawyers. Her tumultuous past also makes her especially devoted to championing and protecting women’s rights.

When Mistry Law is appointed to execute the will of Omar Farid, a wealthy mill owner, Perveen’s suspicions are aroused by a curious provision that could disinherit Farid’s three widows and leave them vulnerable. Are the Farid widows–who live in strict seclusion, never leaving the women’s quarters or speaking to men–being duped by an unscrupulous guardian?

Perveen decides to investigate, but when tensions escalate to murder, it becomes clear that her own life is in mortal peril and she will need to use everything in her power to outwit a dangerous criminal.

My Review

This book was gifted by a friend in 2018 but I haven’t read until now, thanks to quarantine time.  I read the story line and some rave reviews which made me read the book after a long hiatus.  It was my first time to read a narrative based on the mystery.

When I started reading the book, I had thought just to share the short review in my social media, but when I completed, Zing! It deserves to be on my blog.

This story must be read by the world due to its plot and the protagonist’s character.  The book story is based during 1916-1921 Indian eras which will take you to that time of the year and enhance your imagination as you go through those colonial rules, cultures, women’s rights, romance, foods, and the legal system.

A Murder on Malabar Hill: A gripping murder mystery which will keep you hooked till the end

1921: Perveen Mistry, India’s first female lawyer is responsible for the inheritance allotted to the three widows by their late husband, but gets suspicious when she finds out that widowers guardian might be deceiving. She decides to investigate and find the truth, but abruptly a murder happens that jeopardizes her and she does everything to solve this murder mystery.

1916-1917: In addition to this mystery story, Perveen past is also portrayed which I found more interesting than the murder.  I was intrigued to know about her and the agonizing past, therefore I would read persistently whenever the chapter showed 1916-1917.

Perveen is a graceful, ingenious and a strong Parsi woman, who will leave a big impact on your heart. The author has artistically crafted Perveen which makes her a unique character. I want to know more about her and her intellectual mysteries. Hope, the author brings the character back to life soon.

Why should you pick this book?

  • A gripping story that will keep you hooked till the end.
  • Perveen character and her tumultuous past are intriguing.
  • Learn about different cultures and the colonial era.
  • Beautiful story writing and simple reading.
  • Will enhance your imaginative powers.

Final Thoughts

The best part of reading a good book is that you can draw the characters in your mind, unlike the movies where you can’t imagine another actor even if you want to.

This fiction novel deserves your time. If you love mystery books, then it is for you if you don’t love, still read because you will learn much more than the mystery.

I have written a blog, so it is indeed worth your time. Highly recommend.

Let me know your thoughts on this book.  Which is your favourite book?
