A Meaty Pastrami on Rye with the Green Pickles Please...

By Boberika @boberika

The oldest delicatessen in New York City (established 1888), Katz's is also the only place in town that still carves all its pastrami and corned beef by hand. It was made famous by the 'I'll have what she's having' scene in When Harry Met Sally and is always full of tourists as well as locals.

During the queuing process we met some of the locals who gave us the low down on what to order and how it has changed over the years. But the impression we got from these super friendly and helpful older New York ladies was that Katz still remains an institution and to the tourist it feels like you’ve stepped into a patch of true urban mythology. And the servings are huge! We were recommended to try the pastrami and corned beef on rye, with the big green pickles (instead of the yellow ones) and washed it down with (you guessed it!) Cream Soda.

New York has many other delicatessens, but for the combination of delicious meat, charm and history, Katz is a great dining experience...
