A Majority Now Thinks New Gun Laws Are Needed
For many years, a majority of the public opposed new gun laws. They said all we needed to do was to more strictly enforce the laws already on the books (ignoring the fact that policing agencies already enforce those laws as much as possible). That has now changed. Since about 2012 (about the time of the Newtown mass shooting of 6 and 7 year-olds) that has changed. Now 51% say new gun laws are needed, while 47% still just want to enforce existing laws.
These charts are from a recent Gallup Poll (taken before the recent shooting in Texas). It was done between October 5th and 11th of a random national sample of 1,028 adults, with a 4 point margin of error.
