The man in MONTREAL, Armed with a hatchet and sprays, used to deter bears attacked worshippers at the mosque on Saturday in Canada; however, no one was seriously injured, police say.
The man, who was 24 years old, entered an Islamic mosque located in the city of Mississauga in the suburb of Toronto and sprayed the crowd before being subdued by members of their congregation until the police showed up to arrest the suspect.
A few participants of the group received minor injuries due to the spray of bears.
The investigation focuses on whether this incident is an isolated incident and is examining hate as a motive, according to police in an announcement.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau put out a tweet praising the attack as “incredibly alarming.”
“I deeply condemn this act of violence , that has no place in Canada as well as keeping this Canadian community in my thoughts this day,” Trudeau wrote.
Others in the public sphere joined the chorus of protests, such as the Mayor of Toronto and the Ontario provincial premier.
The mosque’s imam, Ibrahim Hindy, praised the bravery of the worshipers who subdued the attacker.
“Our community will never break and we are not afraid,” he tweeted.
