A Landlord Walks into a Church

Our survey said

By now most people will have caught up with last week’s survey on job satisfaction, with clergy coming out at Number One and landlords at Number Two Hundred and Seventy Four. A bit of me wonders whether this will lead to a spate of “landlord walks into a church…” jokes?

Yesterday Premier Radio interviewed me about the survey and my views on job satisfaction. For me, ministry is exhausting, rewarding, stressful and inspiring in equal measure. In short, it is a rare privilege which I never take for granted. Had I remembered it yesterday, I would have quoted the following in my interview. It comes from the introduction to the sermon preached at my ordination to Christian ministry in November 1992:

“A man recently back from walking the Great Wall of China described it as: vertiginously steep, palpitatingly exhausting and worth it every rotten step of the way- it in these terms I commend the Christian ministry to you, dear brother”
