A Japanese Food Treat – Matsuri

By Rohit Dassani

Matsuri is one of the only few authentic Japanese restaurant in Bangalore. Part of the Chancery Hotel at Lavelle Road and headed by Chef Okano the offerings here are simple exotic. The decor fully comply with the Japanese culture. At Matsuri every care is taken to make sure Japanese traditions are followed. The walls are beautiful, covered with floral designs with light Japanese music in the air. The beauty of Japanese food is the fact that it is very light and healthy in all aspects.

The menu comprises of many exotic dishes and is a paradise for Japanese food lovers and enthusiasts. Chef Okano curated a special menu for the evening and we were looking forward to it. First, we were served the Miso Soup with vegetables. This traditional soup was made out of Miso paste or fermented soybeans and served with tofu and green leaves. Next, we tried the bento box comprising of the Yasai Tempura or butter fried seasonal vegetables served with white radish and tempura sauce. The ‘Sunomono and Mizore-su’ was a Japanese styled pickle with Mizure sauce. The Mizure sauce was simply out of the world. Loved their Tofu no Teriyaki, which had deepfried Tofu with Japanese Teriyaki sauce. Lastly, the ‘Yasai Shinjou to Takiawase’ had vegetable dumpling served with boiled vegetables. The bento box is a great way to enjoy the different Japanese food.

But the best was yet to come and I could wait to try the vegetarian Sushi offerings. The Sushi were packed with shredded carrots and cucumber. The entire experience of having Sushi with pickled ginger, wasabi and soysauce is simply amazing. Lastly we had the Kake Udon which is made from Udon noodles with soya based soup and topped with scallions. Now here is one dish that is truly exotic in taste and look. For desserts we had the Fruit Crème Mitsumame. The dessert had cubes of seaweed agar gelatin with ice cream and fresh fruits. Absolutely loved my dessert and the icecream was simply delicious.
