A Few Of My Favourite Things – May 2014

Chia Seed Juice Snack

This year is whipping by, and I feel like there are not enough hours in the day to keep up with the basics, let alone indulge in the things I really want to be doing.  Whingeing aside, here are a few things that have grabbed my interest over the last few months:

  • You know those times when you just need a little something to eat to get you through to the next meal, but don’t have anything remotely healthy to snack on.  I love this idea of creating an instant snack, just by adding chia to juice.  This is a particularly good tip if you get into the habit of carrying chia shots with you.
  • Have you wondered whether you have a healthy relationship with food?  I found this article on people who don’t let food dictate their lives interesting, and was happy to see that all the listed food habits relate to the way we eat in our household.
  • Breakfast is possibly the meal I struggle with the most.  It is something I know I should eat, but on those mornings when I need to get out the door, I need something quick and filling.  My latest quick breakfast is an organic crumpet with a thick, thick layer of nut butter, but these 10 make ahead breakfast ideas are great for inspiration as well.
  • The 10 utensils you shouldn’t live without.   Mr Grumpy will be glad to know they are all in my kitchen so I don’t need to go on a shopping spree.
  • Over time I have learnt to appreciate just how crucial the freezer is in keeping me sane during a busy week.  Here are some great tips for organising and storing things in the freezer.
  • Popcorn can be a a really healthy snack, but like everything how you cook it and what you put on it matters.  You might wish to consider the hidden dangers of microwave popcorn before you next reach for that microwave bag.
  • Ever wondered how long you can really keep that jar of mayonnaise for?  This is a useful infographic about the shelf life of different foods.
  • The different qualities of various fats and oils determine their suitability for cooking.  Some fats can be heated to higher temperatures than others but I find it difficult to remember which ones when there are so many of them.  This chart clearly details the suitability of each fat for each cooking method.
  • With gluten free baking becoming more common, this beginners guide to gluten free flours is extremely useful.
  • What career should you actually have?  Apparently I missed my calling and should really be an astronaut.  Researcher or teacher are not bad back up plans for me. What should you really be?

Don’t forget you can follow me on Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram, or like me on Facebook, if you want to see what grabs my attention on a daily basis.
