New York City is the most populous city in the United States. It has up to 800 languages with an estimated 18.9 million people. New York is the 27th largest, the 3rd most populous and the 7th most densely populated of the 50 United States. New York is a state in the Middle Atlantic region of the United States. Although New York City is the largest city in the country, much of New York is still rural. Albany is its state capital.
New York is made up of five districts where there are hundreds of district boroughs, many of which have their own history that defines their city. The districts are:
Manahattan - the most densely populated where Central Park is located.
The Bronx - where the Yankee Stadium is located, the home of the New York Yankees. They are also famous for their Bronx Zoo, the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States that has over 6,000 animals. Bornx is the cradle of rap and hip hop culture.
Brooklyn - known for its cultural, social and ethnic diversity, an independent art scene, distinct neighborhoods and a distinctive architectural heritage
Queens - the largest district and most ethnically diverse county in the United States.
Staten Island - the most suburban in character of the five districts.
New York City's food ethnicity encompasses a variety of world cuisines influenced by the city's immigrant history. Eastern European and Italian immigrants made the city famous for New York-style bagels, cheesecakes and pizza. Chinese restaurants are omnipresent. About 4,000 mobile street vendors are licensed by the city, many of which are immigrant-owned, have produced Middle Eastern foods such as falafel and modern New York street food skewers. But hot dogs and pretzels are still the main street fare. The city also hosts many of the best and most diverse haute cuisine restaurants in the United States. Visit the Manhattan ski center, Saranac lake in winter, the first lake and North Creek. Experience its parades, especially the lavish Thanksgiving parade and the St. Patrick's Day parades.
The Empire State Building. A journey to the top is on everyone's itinerary. Check out the Empire Room for a trip back in time to the golden age of the city, or try Heartland Brewery and Rotisserie to try more modern dishes.
For some greenery (or a lot in this case) go to Central Park in the heart of Manhattan. While you're there, check out the Green Tavern in Central Park. Less than a Visitor's Center restaurant today, it's still the Taverna on the green. The same goes for the most soulful of all soul food establishments, Sylvia's Restaurant or the famous Nazi real-life soup - Al Yeganeh, the original Soup Man.
Let's not forget the most famous icons of New York (and perhaps the icon of the United States), the Statue of Liberty. You can visit the Statue by ferry or you can enjoy a great view of the Staten Island ferry.
