9 Tips to Do a Healthy Detox Diet: Forget About the Fad Diets and Starvation

1. Start with a Healthy Breakfast

It is very important not to skip the most important meal of the day. Remember that what you eat for breakfast affects what you eat the rest of the day. Skipping breakfast sets you up to binge later because you're not getting enough energy to kick off the day. Try loading up on a bowl of high-fiber, multi-grain cereal, lots of strawberries and low-fat milk on top or a scrambled egg with beans or salmon and a slice of whole-wheat toast. You can also start your day with a cup of hot water with fresh lemon and ginger to prepare your digestive system for solid foods plus it has good antioxidant effects.

2. Go Green

Nobody likes to eat a big bowl of green veggies. We know right? But before you neglect and avoid these foods, you need to know that green leafy vegetables have more nutrition than any other foods combined. They are rich sources of vitamins A, C, E, and K as well as several B vitamins. Also, it has high fiber content, extremely low in fat and carbohydrates and provides an excellent source of protein. Try whipping up blended green smoothies or increase salads and green juices for your lunch and dinner. You can also grab a bowl of vegetables (spinach, carrots, broccoli, etc.), a little fruit (an apple or orange) and some proteins from egg white or plain yogurt.

3. Pick healthy snacks

Picking healthy snacks means snacking smart. Make sure you grab between-meal foods that offer a good nutritional punch. Best picks: a small bag of plain pretzels or whole wheat crackers with peanut butter. These foods will fill you up with proteins and will keep you full longer. Indulging in potato chips and tortillas are okay but make sure you keep it in moderation because they do contain the worst kinds of fats: saturated and trans fats.

4. Spice it up

Including spicy foods in your diet speeds up your metabolism. It stimulates digestion of toxins in your digestive tract and on a cellular level. It improves blood circulation in your body and naturally detoxifies your lymph, blood, bowels, and kidneys. Research also found that you consume fewer calories from fat following spicy food consumption. Try adding cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, fennel, fenugreek, parsley and rosemary to your diet. Add gradually to your diet as too quickly may upset your digestive system.

5. Dry Brushing

Brushing with a skin brush is an inexpensive, natural beauty routine that stimulates blood circulation, removing dead skin cells in the body to give you a brighter and tighter skin. Skin brushing opens up your pores and drains toxins away from your body. Try brushing before showering and bathing and make sure you use a soft bristled brush so you will not irritate your skin.

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

It may be obvious, but it is worth the reminder. Drink lots of clean and refreshing water. Water helps your body's system to function at optimum levels. It flushes toxins out of your body and ensures that your blood will carry plenty of oxygen to all the cells of your body. Your immune system functions best when your muscles and organs are functioning best.

7. Sweat it Up

When you sweat, toxins are naturally excreted from the skin. This is the very reason why exercise is an essential detox method of all time. It helps you burn calories and flush out toxins stored in fat cells. There are also other great ways to sweat like sitting in a sauna or steam room or taking a hot yoga class. Regular activity helps your body detoxify and excrete toxins more rapidly.

8. Avoid Sugar, Dairy, Alcohol, and Fats

Try cutting these foods out from your diet. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats out from your diet. These are unhealthy foods that act as toxins in your body that makes you feeling like you need to cleanse in the first place.

9. Sleep More

It is most recommended to get some good sleep between 10 pm and 2 am. During this crucial time, your body repairs and rejuvenates cells naturally and efficiently, getting rid of toxins within your body, If you sleep later than these hours, you may be missing out the most luxurious way to detox- good hours of sleep.
