Everyone's favorite judge, dispensing justice from behind menacing eyes. Judge Dredd is here.
Judge Dredd
Putting the poor Sylvester Stallone movie aside for a minute, Judge Dredd has a legacy that extends outside of the comic book world, with his name becoming synonymous with authoritarian governments and police states in a similar way, though to a lesser extent, as George Orwell's 1984. As a character, well they don't really get much memorable than Judge Dredd, and as such he has been honoured with multiple best comic book character awards. You will always find him in top 100 best character lists.
Case Files Volume 1 covers some staple Dredd stories and introduces you to some of the characters and themes that makes this one of the best graphic novels. Some essential Dredd stories are the robot revolution (call-me-Kenneth) and Return of Rico. If you are going to read Judge Dredd, do the decent thing and buy volume one. It is the only place to start if you want to get immersed in the world of this book.
Just to cap this review off, I'll go back to something I mentioned earlier – the Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd film. A movie outing for one of the best comic book characters was a long time coming, and many comic book fans were excited about going to see it. Entertainment-wise, it disappointed. However, it pulled in a fortune (an estimated $113, 493, 481 worldwide). That is why there has always been talk of another Judge Dredd film.
Well it seems the wait is almost over. This year Judge Dredd will be let loose on our cinemas, in what looks to be a reboot rather than a sequel. Directed by Pete Travis, let's hope this film can be the one that does justice to one of the top 100 best graphic novels.
