Apple just held its World Developers Conference, known as WWDC, where Apple unveiled iOS 14, which appears to be one of the biggest updates to the operating system in a long time.
Now the home screen has the option of being more personalized and among the new features, Apple added an application drawer. Some of the iOS features may seem innovative but the truth is that the operating system is more like Android than ever.
We present 8 things that iOS 14 copied from Android.
Widgets on the home screen
iOS 14 introduces the biggest change to the iOS home screen. The first part of this revolution comes in the form of widgets for the home screen.
Widgets have been around in the iOS system for a long time, but have so far been limited to the left of the screen. Now it has been redesigned and you can add them to the home screens and they ask to have different sizes to make sure you have the correct amount of information you want and put as many or as few as you want.
Apple also created a new “ Smart Stack ” widget that automatically displays different app widgets based on the time of day. The idea of home screen widgets is one that has been around on Android from the start.
Application box
Apple calls it an app library, but it has the same idea as Android. The Library app is on the far right of the iOS 14 home screen and groups all of your installed apps into smart folders. You can also use the search bar to find a specific application if you don’t feel like searching through preset groupings.
Now iOS also allows you to hide applications on your normal home screens, making it experience very similar to the Android system.
Picture-in-picture
If you have an Android phone, you are probably familiar with the “ Picture in Picture “. Being able to see a video in a window on the home screen is something that cell phones have from the Android 8.0 Oreo system, but iOS had not included it.
iOS 14 added this feature allowing you to watch the video on your home screen or in another app and easily multitask. You can also hide the player in a sidebar if you want the audio to keep playing but hide the video.
Apple is improving the execution of the picture in the picture to be one of the best that exists. iOS 14 allows you to easily adjust the size of the player by dragging to the corner.
Default application settings
One of the complaints of the iOS system has been the inability to set third-party applications as the default application. For example, even if you have Google Chrome installed as a web browser, pressing a link will always open Safari without the possibility of changing it.
This finally changed in iOS 14, as users now have the ability to configure their default email and browser apps. Apple sneaked it in as a small graphic during the WWDC conference presentation rather than explicitly talking about it which could please multiple users.
Translation application
Google has several applications but one of the most useful is Google Translate. This tool has been important to communicate with people who do not speak the same language as you.
Apple will be using iOS 14 introducing its own translation application and it has only 11 languages, while Google Translate has more than 100.
Application clips
In the new operating system iOS 14, Apple has its App Clips store which is the Apple version of Google Play Instant that allows you to run a light version of an iOS application without having to install it. App Clips appear in the new App Library after you use them.
New Siri design
In the new system, the Siri wizard appears with a small indicator at the bottom of your screen that keeps you in the current application or website with which you were interacting previously. It’s a much more similar approach to what it looks like when Google Assistant is activated on an Android phone.
App permissions on the App Store
Android has focused in recent years on renewing application permissions, which has made the operating system easier to use while respecting the privacy of users.
Privacy is one of the ideals that Apple prides itself on more, making it much more fun that it is now adding app permissions to the App Store.
Now when you open an application in the App Store in iOS 14, you will finally see what permissions that application requests, although it is something quite basic, it is something that has not been offered previously.
