7 Reasons Why You Should Watch Black Butler

By Vanessa Kay @blushinggeek

Just like Code Geass, I’ve been reading a lot of hype about this anime, Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji in Japanese), for a long time now but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to jump directly into it and finally watch it myself. And my! It was so good.

I didn’t actually like it the instant I watched the first episode, it took me quite a while to finally get into it and appreciate the story. I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Ciel and his butler Sebastian and it was also nice being acquainted with the supporting characters as they really helped lightened up the anime, making us smile (maybe even laughing) so we don’t feel as scared (or sad) while watching it.

Whether you like anime or not, I’m sure Black Butler will never disappoint. You may hate it in some parts (especially in Season 2) but I’m certain it wouldn’t be a total failure. That said, I really recommend that you give Black Butler a shot. Who knows, it might surprise you.

7 Reasons Why You Should Watch Black Butler

  1. Plot

A little sypnosis taken from myanimelist.

Young Ciel Phantomhive is known as “the Queen’s Guard Dog,” taking care of the many unsettling events that occur in Victorian England for Her Majesty. Aided by Sebastian Michaelis, his loyal butler with seemingly inhuman abilities, Ciel uses whatever means necessary to get the job done. But is there more to this black-clad butler than meets the eye?

In Ciel’s past lies a secret tragedy that enveloped him in perennial darkness—during one of his bleakest moments, he formed a contract with Sebastian, a demon, bargaining his soul in exchange for vengeance upon those who wronged him. Today, not only is Sebastian one hell of a butler, but he is also the perfect servant to carry out his master’s orders—all the while anticipating the delicious meal he will eventually make of Ciel’s soul. As the two work to unravel the mystery behind Ciel’s chain of misfortunes, a bond forms between them that neither heaven nor hell can tear apart.

Aside from the chemistry between the main characters, what I like about this anime is that it was able to combine mystery, crime, drama, humor, (a lot of tea-time, *wink) supernatural and little bits of satire SO FLAWLESSLY. At first it might seem a little weird, but after the second or third episode, you will sure to get hooked on the show and will want to see more of the adventures of the amazing duo. That said, it’s absolutely one of those shows that gets better as you watch.

  1. Sebastian

I was actually tempted of putting Sebastian in number one but I don’t want to sound so eager (even though I am, haha) so I put him in number two instead, *wink.

To tell you honestly, I think Sebastian is a pretty solid reason why you should watch this show. Why? ‘Coz he’s simply “one hell of a butler”. He’s cool, charming, witty, sharp, creative, sexy and definitely a butler worth his salt. What can I say, I just love this guy! I am actually thinking of getting my own butler after watching this show, haha.

  1. Art

As I’ve told you before, I’m a very visual person and I love cute things. But Black Butler is far from cute (although I find Ciel really cute, *wink) as it is a really dark anime. But my! All the artworks we’re so BEAUTIFUL! The animation, the fight scenes, everything is just so beautiful! Of all the anime that I have watched, I have to say that Black Butler is one of the few that gave me an absolute perfection with all the graphics.

  1. Ciel

Ciel’s actions are always calm and calculated (until Lizzy steps in the room ofcourse, lol) so sometimes I forgot that he’s only twelve years old. He lost both of his parents after the brutal attack in their home and he suffers a great deal of pain (physically and mentally) and was almost on the edge of dying until Sebastian came in the picture and offered him a contract. Since then, these two were inseparable. They’re perfectly in sync and they could look sweet too at times.

I haven’t watched yaoi anime before so I can’t say I’m a fan, but my! Seeing Sebastian and Ciel together makes me blush! They’re just so perfect!

  1. Voice Actors

I’m not really choosy in this aspect of anime but my! Just like Code Geass, I really think the English dub of Black Butler was so good especially the voice actors of Ciel and Sebastian. I can’t think of any capable English voice actor who can portray Sebastian more perfect than J. Michael Tatum himself. It also didn’t help that he also voiced my labidabs Tomoe (Kamisama Kiss) and Kyoya (Ouran Highschool Host Club)!

I think the voices and acting were excellent plus I love the accent hehe. I also watched some few clips in Japanese and as usual, it was perfect! But I think I prefer the English voice actor of Sebastian, *wink.

  1. Supporting characters

Ciel and Sebastian alone is enough for me but with these supporting characters, it makes Black Butler complete. There were some episodes in this anime that was really dark and there’s cruelty and blood everywhere but with these supporting characters, it made the anime lighter to watch. Contrary to what I expected, I really laugh a lot watching this anime.

  1. Sebastian

And since I can’t get enough of this particular butler and not to mention the hottest in his kind, I think it would be proper ending this list mentioning this “one hell of a butler” Sebastian Michaelis with all his glory, *wink.

Conclusion

Black Butler is a good anime series to watch with friends or even snuggle up alone and marathon through the show. Also, it has a really good live action movie that is worth checking out too. So, was I able to convince you?

Or have you already watched the show? What do you think?
