Many dogs do not like having their nails cut, but leaving them too long can cause serious problems. Last summer, I went too long before cutting my dog and learned this lesson the hard way. My puppy's dew claw broke below the rapids and we had to make an emergency trip to the vet to fix it. He left with a patriotic leg, because it was two days before July 4, and I left with a heavy bill.

Letting your dog's nails grow too long can scratch your floors when they get zoomed-in, hang carpets and rugs, and of course, scratch their humans. But they also run the risk of breaking too low, which can lead to infection. Instead, trim your pet's nails regularly, so they don't reach this point. How often they need it depends on their lifestyle. If they take a lot of walks on the sidewalk, they can file their claws enough to spend some time between the pads.
If they spend more time on the grass and on your couch, you may need to clip them more frequently. Even if you can't get to the groomer or want to go the DIY route, you can get one of the best nail clippers for a relatively cheap price (and while you're at it, you might as well consider refreshing your current pet equipment collection for some improved indestructible dog harnesses, leashes, and toys).
