Connecticut is the southernmost state in the New England region of the United States. As of the 2010 registration, it has the most elevated per-capita income, the second-most significant level of human improvement behind Massachusetts, and the most elevated middle-family income in the United States. It is lined by Rhode Island toward the east, Massachusetts toward the north, New York toward the west, and Long Island Sound toward the south. Its capital is Hartford and its most crowded city is Bridgeport. Historically the state is important for New England as well as the tri-state region with New York and New Jersey, which together make up metropolitan New York City. The state is named for the Connecticut River which roughly bisects the state. “Connecticut” is gotten from different anglicized spellings of “Quononoquett” (Conanicut), a Mohegan-Pequot word for “long flowing waterway”.
