Indiana is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States. It is the 38th-largest by area and the seventeenth most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. Indiana was admitted to the United States as the nineteenth state on December 11, 1816. It is lined by Lake Michigan toward the northwest, Michigan toward the north, Ohio toward the east, the Ohio River and Kentucky toward the south and southeast, and the Wabash River and Illinois toward the west.
