5 Ways to Support your Local High-Street

In this dog-eat-dog world where major high-street chains can afford to undercut small, independent business, our unique local retailers are struggling to survive. Here’s how you can help:
1. Divert 20% of your Christmas spending
Retail expert, Clare Raynor recently set up a campaign urging shoppers to divert 20% of what they might spend in major chain stores this Christmas and to spend it with their local retailers instead. If everybody did this, the impacts on local communities would be huge. Pledge your support to the campaign and follow suit
2. Buy fresh
It’s not just the local lifestyle and homeware brands that need our help. Everyday, fresh and organic food vendors lose out on custom due to the low-price and convenience offered by major chain supermarkets. This Christmas, buy your turkey fresh from your local butchers (it’ll taste better, we guarantee) and make an everyday conscious decision to buy your fruit and veg fresh from local food suppliers.
3. Donate and Recycle
When it comes to throwing your unwanted clothes, books and other items away, avoid taking them to the tip and instead, put value back into your high street by donating ‘old’ things to charity shops. These businesses rely on the goodwill of others for survival, so think twice before automatically throwing old things into bins. Not only will it help your high street, but it’s environmentally friendly too
4. Do Your Research
When shopping in major high-street chains, most people are guilty of impulse buying every now and again, thanks to overbearing sale offers and irresistible displays positioned next to tills. In a bid to support local retailers and save yourself some pennies in the meantime, research independent stores around you and head there whenever you need something specific.
5. Spread the word
If you find a high quality, niche boutique tucked away behind the masses of chain stores in your local shopping centre, spread the word. Advertising is costly and so local businesses often rely on word-of-mouth to reach new customers. If you come across a lovely local retailer, tell your friends and family about it!
