Genes. Some of us feel cursed, and some of us feel blessed with the genetic destinies we’ve been given.
Traditionally, we were taught that we’re stuck with what we’ve got, but science is showing us the contrary: the genes you were born with are not your destiny! Going even further, even if you have “good” genes, science has proven that these can be significantly altered for the worse by our environmental interactions.
Thus, despite how each of us was born, how we interact with our environment has a huge role in how we express and/or repress certain genes. Read on to discover a few things directly in your control to change your genetic fate for the better!1) Turn OFF poor genetic expression by cutting out the sugar.Sugar and high glycemic carbohydrates flood us with high levels of blood sugar that our bodies have to work extremely hard at to clear up, because at high levels, sugar is a toxin. Excess sugar is stored as fat, which can lead to metabolic disease, also leading to weakened bones, a depressed immune system, slowed neural communication, wrinkling and arthritis.
2) Turn OFF poor genetic expression by cutting out the vegetable oil.Yes, we think anything with the word “vegetable” is supposed to mean healthy. Yet vegetables are highly processed, refined, and a man-made product since the early 1900′s that our bodies don’t know how to process. Loaded in boxed, canned, packaged and restaurant foods, these oils lead to inflammation and toxic damage in our arteries and body in general.
3) Turn ON good genetic expression by eating your medicine. And by “medicine,” I mean whole foods; unrefined, minimally processed, natural foods that grow in the ground or have a mother.
Vegetables (greens, especially!), fruits, low-glycemic starches (beans, quinoa, oats, sweet potatoes, etc.), nuts/seeds, meat/poultry/eggs, minimal full fat dairy,
and healthy fats are medicine. Full of antioxidants and phytonutrients, these powerful foods fight cancer, improve bone health, help weight loss, and improve heart health.
4) Turn ON good genetic expression by eating organic. In a world where 42 BILLION pounds of chemicals are made or imported daily, we’re overexposed to these harmful substances that
change our genetic expression for the worse – mutating genes, overloading our livers, and promoting harmful, inflammatory processes. Choosing mostly organic foods means less chemical exposure, and less havoc wreaked on our bodies.
5) MOVE your body for the best genetic expression! We weren’t designed to sit in cubicles and stare at computer screens all day; we are designed to move! It is not an option, in fact, because it is that vital to healthy blood flow, energy, weight loss and maintenance, heart protection, mood, stamina, and sex life. Fit it in when you can get it in via walking, talking the stairs, short circuit workouts, etc.
