Practicing mindfulness every day has untold benefits on the health and happiness of the people who practice it! Most people aren't mindful, and we're all a little guilty of not being mindful from time to time. We're all so focused on some other point in the future, trying to plan and control the outcomes of things, that we miss the present moment and don't enjoy life as much as we should!
Living in the moment means enjoying every single moment to the fullest. It means appreciating each and every day, the good and the bad, and not letting your life flash by before your eyes. If this is something you'd like to practice, then read on for 5 ways you can practice mindfulness today:
MeditationMeditation isn't just for monks and hippies. Meditation is for all kinds of people. People who want to improve their life in any way will find that meditation can help them to get to where they want to be. It can be tough to start meditating if you've never done it before, so you can try using an app or a YouTube video to help you the first few times you do it. Remember, success with this is all about taking baby steps. Try 2 minutes a day for the first week, then 5 minutes, then 8 minutes, and build yourself up until you're doing at least 10 minutes per day. Get used to the feeling of meditating, and in no time you'll enjoy your new practice. People who meditate are calmer, happier, more creative, can solve problems easier, and tend to be healthier physically too. There are so many benefits!
WalkingSimply walking can also be a way to practice mindfulness. Try not to get lost in your thoughts. Take in the fresh air, and look at your surroundings. Notice the colors and the way the leaves and flowers blow in the wind. Feel any sunlight or wind on your body. Take deep breaths as you walk. Walking meditation is an amazing kind of meditation!
If you can walk and practice this rather than driving short trips, then do it. You can teach yourself to be present while driving, but it's all too easy to worry about having a collision by a car rather than focusing on staying in the moment.
Force Yourself To Be Fully Present In Something You Do Every DayWhether it's ironing clothes or washing the dishes, force yourself to be fully present in something you do every day. Pay attention to all of your senses. You might actually find that you enjoy doing chores more when you stay in the moment with them like this.
Take Deep Belly BreathsMost of us breathe like we're stressed, which makes the body believe we are stressed, even when we're not. Take deeper belly breaths more often and you should notice tension disappear.
Ground Yourself PhysicallyGrounding yourself physically is as easy as feeling your feet on the floor and paying attention to all of your senses. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell? Doing this can even help panic attacks. Take a deep breath when you transition from one activity to the next. Taking a few moments between transitioning helps you to stay present in everything you're doing.
