5 Unique Things to Experience in the Canary Islands

A Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, the Canary Islands present an ideal tourist destination with gorgeous beaches, colonial towns, amusement parks, bustling shopping scenes, and sizzling nightclubs.

But, if you're looking for something a little more out of the ordinary to do here, you won't be disappointed. From stargazing with historical kings to walking through ancient laurel forests, here are five unique experiences in the Canary Islands.

1. Splash in Charco Azul

Indulge in pure bliss away from the crowds with a visit to the smallest and most remote of the Canary Islands. A paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers with its crystal clear waters and amazing marine life, El Hierro is also home to the beautiful turquoise pools of Charco Azul, a result of aged lava flow. Steal away for a day to bathe and relax in this natural swimming pool that's protected from the crashing sea by volcanic rock formations.

2. Stargaze with the Kings of Fuerteventura

Designated an official Starlight Reserve in 2015, Fuerteventura is the place to be in the Canary Islands for stargazers. See the Milky Way and all its splendor at the Morro Velosa lookout beneath the watchful eyes of two giant bronze statues of Fuerteventura's former kings. Just steps away are gardens, a cafe, and an observatory where you can marvel panoramic views of the island.

3. Walk Through an Ancient Laurel Forest

La Gomera may be one of the smallest islands of the Canary Island archipelago, but it offers unforgettable escapades in the Garajonay National Park. One of the most magical of experiences of all is a walk through one of the largest and oldest laurel forests in the world, which is teeming with trees, flowers, birds and animals native to the island.

4. Go on an Adventure to Explore Tenerife's Prettiest Village

Drive or hike from Santiago down narrow, winding slopes through lush palm trees, jade green pools, and awe-inspiring ravine walls into a scenic gorge to reach Masca, "Tenerife's prettiest village."

After time well-spent in this picturesque hamlet of cobbled walkways, multicolored flowers and traditional houses, continue your journey down to the ocean where you can set off on a boat cruise to admire the breathtaking cliffs of Los Gigantes.

5. Listen to the Most Unique Language in the World

When visiting the island of La Gomera, you don't want to miss out on hearing the most unique language in the world. Known as Silbo Gomero, this interesting communication system involves various skilled whistling techniques. Silbo Gomero was traditionally used by the Guanches (the island's original inhabitants) to communicate across the island's valleys and ravines. Today, you can hear this whistling language demonstrated in the island's restaurants and festivals.

The Canary Islands offer way too many magical experiences to all be included on this list. For example, you can also ride camels in Gran Canaria, see the world's largest telescope in La Palma, or watch nature use wind and sea to play a giant cliff-faced musical organ in La Gomera. However, this list gives you an idea of the amazing memories you can make while visiting the Canary Islands.
