5 Tried and Tested Ways to Add Value to Your Home

Posted on the 15 February 2022 by Bboj Handyman

There are numerous reasons that people want to move house, such as getting an extra bedroom as a family grows, moving for a new job, or family grows or downsizing once the kids have fled the nest. Whatever the reason that you have decided that you want to move house, you want to make sure that you get the best value you can when selling your house.

If you are looking to move house over the next few months, here are five ways to breathe new life into your home and boost that purchase price.

1. Repaint the walls

Paint will chip, crack, and fade over time. If the color of your walls look a little dull or the paint is starting to flake then this may have an impact on the value the buyer sees in the property, especially if your property has painted exterior walls. First impressions matter!

Fortunately, there’s a simple remedy to this problem—applying a fresh coat of paint. You can do it yourself or hire handymen for a more professional service and completed much more quickly than you will be able to do the job yourself.

2. Pressure wash the patio or decking

When you put your house on the market, the building and garden should been kept clean and neat. This means keeping an eye on the lawn and the borders neat, but also making sure that your patio or decking are clean of dirt, grime, and weeds.

You could scrub the deck yourself, but it is much quicker and easier to use a pressure washer. Jet washers are available to rent from a variety of centres, but your local handyman could do the whole job for you. And they could carefully pressure wash your sidings and windowsills at the same time so that the exterior of your property looks the best it can.

3. Tidy the garden

An unkept garden will give the impression that you may not take care of your property and could put off potential buyers. You do not need to spend a fortune on a complete re-landscaping, but it is important to keep the lawn well mowed, the borders tidy, and the lawn clear of toys.

An outdoor cupboard can give you an easy place to store any outdoor kids’ toys when they are not in use, and a god place to hide the gardening tools out-of-site. Just as keeping each room of the house tidy and clear makes the rooms look bigger, the same is true for your garden.

4. Clean the carpets and wax the floors

Carpets and rugs will get worn out over time, and whilst nobody expects a house to be freshly carpeted when they purchase a property, freshly cleaned carpets can bring a room back to life.

Similarly, wooden floors will start to look scratched and dull over time, and a quick waxing will make them sparkle will little effort, and a thorough mopping of the kitchen tiles will do the same.

5. Regrout the tiles

No matter how well you look after the tiles in your bathroom or kitchen, eventually the grouting will start to discolour making the tiles look old and tired. You could go for a full retiling of the room to refresh the look, but for those on a budget simply regrouting the tiles – removing the old grey/black grout and replacing it with fresh bright white grout – will make the tiles look as good as new.

Conclusion

There are various ways to add thousands to the price of your home with little effort or expense. Many of these tasks can be done yourself, but if you are short on time or would like to ask a professional what would be the most effective upgrades for your home before you put it on the market, then our London handymen can help.
