Explore the Islands

While the Islands of Florida and South Carolina are often discussed, it seems like many people do not think of Georgia’s islands when planning a vacation. However, Georgia’s coast is scattered with little islands and coastal towns that can add quite a bit of charm and fun to your vacation.
Tybee Island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, boasts beaches that are great for swimming and paddleboarding. The island is also home to two historical lighthouses. Perfect for kids (or kids at heart), the Tybee Island Marine Science Center allows you to get up close and personal with your favorite aquatic creatures. There are so many great places to stay and to eat around Tybee Island that you could plan an entire trip to this destination alone.
Go Ghost Hunting
Many people believe that Savannah, Georgia, is haunted. There is thought to be a ghost in the basement of the Moon River Brewing Company, as well in as many other historical locations and buildings around the city. Whether you believe the ghost stories or not, ghost hunting can be a fun way to see the sights around Savannah and other old coastal towns. Join a tour or event or just head out on your own, if you’re brave enough to give that a try.
Escape the Crowds
While the cities and islands of the Georgia coast are awesome, sometimes you just want a day of peace and quiet away from the crowds. Luckily, Georgia has plenty of places where you can spend an afternoon among the peace and quiet of nature — and even pretend like the rest of the world doesn’t exist, if you want! Check out the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge on Wassaw Island or the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, and you will feel like you have escaped to a different world, away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal crowds.
Hit a Festival — or a Few!
If there’s one thing that Georgia really knows how to do well, that is celebrating the life and culture of the region. With events and festivals set along the Georgia coast throughout nearly every month of the year, it is never very hard to find a unique event that you can experience like a local.
In September, check out the Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival — a whole weekend celebrating the incredible food of the region. If you’re visiting in summer, try to catch Brunswick’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration — a party filled with classic fun, games, and food for the whole family.
