One of the problems with today's modern world is that many people lead such busy lives that they seldom spare a thought for those less fortunate than them. It's no secret that people sometimes fall on hard times.

But, most of those individuals feel like there's no 'light at the end of the tunnel' when it comes to resolving their situations. For the most part, some people just need some support and encouragement to get their lives back on track.

If you feel like you could do more to support local charities or people in need of some help, here are five things that you could consider doing this month:

Are you in good physical health? If so, one charitable thing you could do this month is donating some blood. There will always be times where hospital patients will need blood transfusions to help them survive and fight off infections.

Even during the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, you can still donate blood (as long as you don't have any COVID-19 symptoms). The simple act of donating blood means you will be saving people's lives in their hour of need.

Charities can only help people in need if they've got the financial resources to do so. With that in mind, charities rely on donations from individuals and businesses to keep their operations going and to continue helping others.

To that end, you could donate some money to a charity of your choice. Your contribution is welcome and will directly support those less fortunate than yourself. The amount you donate is up to you. Generally speaking, you should only donate what you can afford.

Some religions require followers to donate annually. For example, Islam asks that Muslims pledge 'zakat' - the giving of alms to the poor and needy. If you're interested, take a look at this zakat calculator to learn how much a Muslim should donate to charity each year.

Even if you don't have much disposable income, you could still donate some of your time in the way of volunteer work. As you've probably guessed by now, charities seldom have the funds to pay people that work for them a full-time wage.

Charities rely on volunteers to carry out specific functions and duties that help facilitate their goals. If you have a specific skill that you think could be useful for a local charity, volunteer your time to help them. Your time (and skills) will be greatly appreciated.

A fun way to get involved with generating funds for your charity of choice is by doing some fundraising. There are all kinds of ways you can fundraise, and you can even do so entirely online if that's more convenient for you.

Websites like Go Fund Me allow you to collect money from friends, family, and supporters online and via social media.

Last but not least, you could adjust your spending habits by opting to buy Fairtrade products wherever possible. Doing so helps less fortunate people in developing countries in a variety of different ways. Take a look at the Fairtrade Foundation website for more information.
