5 Things to Do When Waiting for a Delayed Train

By Djridings @fivethingsnow

If you are delayed for a train then think about the following.

1. Firstly look at your ticket and look at the restrictions on it. Do you have to travel on your booked train? Can you take a later train that might be less crowded. Is there a declassified train put in to relieve congestion at your station. This would mean in the UK no first class and standard class.
2. Stand in a position that you can listen out for announcements clearly. This can be difficult especially on a crowded platform. Do you have to be able see the screen? Will listening do and would this enable you to stand closer to the unannounced platform.
3. Observe people that are walking for a train that has just been announced. If it is really busy then it is likely they run and have a false sense of time and importance. Slow down. Don’t be like everybody else. Is your life and destination that important. You will find space. It may be not what you want but be consistently calm.
4. Try to do different things near the station. Go outside and walk a little. Have a drink somewhere different. Have a coffee. Relax. Remove yourself from the stress. There are many phone/tablet apps that will keep you updated on the real time departure times. You don’t have to be with the crowds.
5. Delays are a perfect time to strike up conservation. Scan the concourse and make a random conservation. Just be natural. Everyone has a common ground here so don’t be afraid.

These are just a few thoughts. I’m sure there are many more. If you feel you can contribute a part 2 to this then please email me on [email protected]
