5 star luxury on the banks of the River Thames.
This week we had the privilege of staying at The Royal Horseguards Hotel in Whitehall.
Explore your bedroom and find some surprises. We were staying in an executive double room on the fifth floor of the hotel. The room overlooked the The River Thames with the London Eye and Hungerford bridge clearly in view. We could not have asked for a better London scape. The room was large with complimentary iPad, television in the bathroom and a box of goodies including a shaver and tooth brush! The tea and coffee making facilities in the room were impressive with an individual cafetiere sachets of ground coffee and exotic teas left for us. The bed was comfortable with a complimentary turn down service at about 6.30 in the evening. Sweets were left on the pillow – perfect! The curtains meant business and once drawn gave the room an even more luxurious feel.

A bedroom home from home!
Wake up early as there is plenty for breakfast. For breakfast there was a huge choice on offer at the Royal Horseguards Hotel. The cooked offerings were excellent and the cold meats and cheeses were beautifully displayed and plentiful. The Brie was amazing quality and perfect with the cut your own bread. In addition to the buffet you could order extra items such as omelettes and porridge.The presentation of the breakfast was superb – the best we have seen with good use of lights to tempt you. Behind the breakfast room there are some nice gardens to relax in if sunny. At night these gardens look beautiful and a wonderful place to get some fresh air within the confines of the hotel.

Take a historical tour of the hotel . The hotel is next to the National Liberal Club and its eighth floor was used in the First World War by the secret service. If you ask at reception the hotel will arrange a tour of the building. This includes certain floors of the liberal club, wine cellar and the most impressive ladies toilets you will ever see. The huge staircase is impressive and just by walking around the building you can feel the grade 1 buildings immense history. Out guide was passionate and informative and had enjoyed enjoyed learning about the history himself. We were touched that the day before they had given a seven year old boy a tour because he liked history and had done well at school. These personal touches should not be ignored and are so important for a five star service.

You must book in for afternoon tea at the Royal Horseguards Hotel. Tea is served in the lounge in very traditional surroundings. The service is very attentive and you will find various options available to you. We had the Tattinger Adternoon tea and as the name suggests was served with a perfect glass of bubbles. A three tiered cake stand is presented to you with delicate cakes. finger sandwiches and unusually but brilliantly a mini pulled pork burger! This was warm and complimented the more traditional offerings perfectly. You are welcome to have more sandwiches and other items if you wish. The staff are keen to replenish! Afterwards you are served scones – two varieties, plain and raisin. These were extremely fresh and served with jam and thick clotted cream.
Have a cocktail in the Equus bar. Walk through the lounge and turn right at the piano and you will find the Equus bar. This is the perfect place for a pre dinner drink or cocktail. In addition to your usual cocktail list they serve certain specialties. This month they were serving their ‘7 deadly sins’ to mark Halloween. The bar is intimate and has a relaxed feel. Nuts and crackers are served with your drinks and the service is superb. If you are not staying at the hotel then this bar would be perfect for a cosy drink before returning home from work. The proximity to London’s Waterloo, Charing Cross main line station and Embankment underground station makes this hotel a perfect location.
The Royal Horseguards Hotel is a 5 star hotel that deserves every one of them. You never have to wait for assistance from the moment the doorman greets you and let’s you to the time when you are saying good bye. The hotel is traditional and is proud of its history. There are no gimmicks, just good service, quality food and luxurious settings. You may even see the odd blockbuster being filmed – The bond movies Skyfall and the latest Spectre both had scenes filmed here.
