While we don't want to wish the summer away, the recent spell of cooler weather has suddenly got us feeling all autumnal. But the change in season doesn't mean the adventures have to stop.

If, like us, you need something to look forward to once summer is over, why not book a trip to Munich? Not only does the Bavarian capital stun with its regal architecture, it has a whole lot on offer this September. Here's a roundup of the activities you should add to your holiday itinerary:

1. Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, starting from mid to late September. The 16 to 18-day folk festival has now been running for more than 200 years and attracts millions of people from all over the world. But why is it called Oktoberfest? And what can you expect?

The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 from October 12 to 17 to celebrate the wedding between the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. In the following years, the celebrations were extended and moved forward into September to allow for better weather conditions.

While there are lots of other activities, from fairground attractions and sideshows, Oktoberfest is all about the beer. However, beer served at the festival has to meet special requirements.

This year, Oktoberfest will open on Saturday, September 22 and run until October 7. The Mayor of Munich will tap the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at noon in the Schottenhamel tent.
