So, you've finally turned your attention to that long-distance motorcycle trip ? Well done! You, my friend, are in for the road trip of a lifetime. It doesn't get better than your bike on the road. You know how it goes; wind running through your hair and a close-up view of everything you pass. This is what biker dreams are made of. Still, whether you're jollying around the UK or further afield, preparation is essential. In that way, a biking trip is no different from any other journey by road. So, without further ado, let's look at the five stages of planning you need to tackle before taking off.

5-Step Prep For A Long-Haul Motorcycle Trek

#1 Prep your bikeIf you don't prep your bike, you're sure to land yourself in trouble. So, book in at a garage for a general once over. If they spot any potential problems, take time to invest in motorcycle spares while you have the chance. Even if you think you can make do, you probably can't. Remember, you'll be riding that bike harder than ever before. If your bike isn't in tip-top condition, it isn't up for the job.

#2 Know what to take

Packing light is more important than ever when riding a bike. Heavy bags can unbalance you. Not to mention that they can slow progress and guzzle fuel. Instead, pack only the basics. Stock up on a few tools in case of breakdowns , then pack the bare minimum of clothes. Ideally, you want everything in one small bag. #3 Practice riding with luggageHeavy luggage can unbalance even the best rider. As such, it's essential you practice riding with luggage. If you've never done this before, you won't foresee how much it'll change your riding experience. In the weeks leading up to your trip, then, take your bag along on rides with you. Start short, and build your riding until that bag feels like another extension of your bike. #4 Know where you're going It's crucial you know where you're heading on any road trip, and this is no different. Only, you may find the route becomes that bit more critical with bikes. So, sit down and plan this out. Never opt for a motorway when you could take the scenic route. Note, too, that we have areas such as Cheddar Gorge here in the UK which are a must-do bike route. Look out for similar options in whichever country you're visiting to ensure you see the best sites possible.

#5 Develop a timeline Once you know where you're going, it's time to develop a timeline. With a bike trip, this usually means working out how many miles you need to travel each day. This helps with keeping an even pace which doesn't push you. It also makes life easier when it comes to booking hotels along the way. In fact, with a timeline in mind, you can ensure that your trip is a success from start to finish. And, you can't ask for much more than that.
