5 Questions to Ask to Keep Your Business Relevant

Posted on the 13 June 2019 by Mountain Publishing @mountainpublish

Being a business owner means more than just pumping out a product. You have to know who you are marketing towards and what it is they want. In other words, it is your job to make sure your business stays relevant in a media-saturated world. Here are 6 tips for helping your business keep up with the times.

1. Who Are Your Customers?

Before anything else, you need to find your target audience. These are the people to whom your product or service is directed because of a need or trait found within that demographic. The more specific you can be the better because your marketing is tailored to them. It is more beneficial for you to hit a small number of people that actually want what you have rather than drench a larger group who aren’t interested. Just keep in mind you want the most bang for your buck and finding your target audience is how you will make sure to do that.

2. What Do They Want?

Now that you know your target audience you have to distinguish exactly what it is they want. Take a photography business for example. If you want to get into taking engagement photos for couples, you’ll need to know what your customers are looking for as far as price, session time, and number of edited photos to name a few. If you are wanting to stay relevant then you need to do research into your area to see what is currently popular.

3. Where Can They Find You?

Now that you know who your audience is and what they want, you will want to consider how they can get in touch with you. One important thing to have for your business is a clean, clear website that appropriately introduces your business. Remember, for many people this will be their first introduction to your business so you don’t want to appear sloppy. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to spend an arm and a leg getting the website that you want. There are plenty of ways to have an affordable website created.

4. How Will You Reach Out To Them?

Another important way to stay relevant is to consider how you will stay in contact with your customers. Many people choose to have various social media platforms set up for their business along with blogs that they update regularly. These are all fabulous ideas, but remember that a social media account that isn’t updated regularly, or a blog that rarely has new posts might send the message to customers that you are disconnected from your audience. Make sure you always stay up to date with your accounts.

5. Who Is Your Competition?

If you’re new to the world of business, then your competition is a great place to look to see what people in your area of expertise are used to. You can learn what the current going rate is for your product and the customer care that people expect from a business similar to yours.

Owning your own business can seem like a lot of work. Usually, you work just as much off the clock as you do on the clock without the benefits of getting paid overtime. To stay relevant, the most important thing to do is to keep up with what is happening in your market. If you just set aside a little time each week to take care of your website, social media, blogs and specific customer needs, then it should be much easier to keep up with everything.
