5 Greatest Inventions of the Past Decade, Ranked

In the past decade, we've seen hundreds and thousands of new inventions - especially in the tech space. With endless resources at our disposal, since 2010 countless entrepreneurs have made significant strides in providing people around the globe with innovative solutions for everyday life.

From self-driving cars to streaming, there isn't enough time to list out every single invention that's been on the market over the past 10 years, so here are the top five ranked.

Video Recording Doorbell

While the security system has been around for decades, the video recording doorbell has added a sense of security for millions of people around the world. The video recording doorbell combined security and affordability, which is something that home security systems couldn't do. One of the most well-known systems is the Ring, formerly known as DoorBot, which was turned down on Shark Tank in 2013. This hurdle didn't stop founder Jamie Siminoff as he turned this passion project into a billion-dollar company.

3D Printing

3D printing is another invention of our decade that has worked its way into almost every single industry. From medicine to food to apparel, this unique invention has revolutionized the way in which we make and produce thousands of things. One of the biggest changes 3D printing has done for us is in the world of medicine. It's currently being used to make prosthetic limbs for amputees, meaning more affordable prosthetics for people around the world. 3D printing is also being used to create replicas of human organs, like the heart, for surgeons to use in preparation for surgeries.

Facial Recognition

Facial recognition uses distinguishable facial features to identify a person. This is used to verify identity before logging into a private account, unlocking your phone, and more. In the case of Taylor Swift, she used facial recognition to scan faces of thousands of concert-goers to see if any of her known-stalkers were in attendance. While this advancement in technology comes with pros and cons, many find facial recognition to be an added layer of safety and security.

Ridesharing Apps

Ridesharing apps absolutely boomed in this decade and changed the face of transportation. Companies we all know well like Uber and Lyft were founded in San Francisco, the major hub of tech and one of the most inventive cities in the United States. The first-mover in this space was Uber, the billion-dollar company founded by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick which inspired many competitors to follow suit. In towns where public transportation or taxis weren't available, rideshare apps came in to solve that problem for millions of people across the world.

Square Payment System

The Square payment system was a game-changer for retail, entrepreneurs, and side-hustlers for good. Founded in 2010 by Jack Dorsey, the Square gives vendors the ability to accept credit card payments without the need for a physical cash register. This product has allowed businesses of any size to earn revenue easily and fast.
