Furniture designers are constantly pushing boundaries. Those boundaries can be anything, from colour, shape, to materials and manufacturing processes.

When choosing new furniture it’s good to have a look at the work of recent furniture designers. Not only to find out what is in fashion, but also to get inspired.

These are five famous furniture designers you need to get to know.

Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck is a French designer. His designs are not limited to one field; he is equally talented in designing products, interiors and architecture.

His eco-friendly designs include a two-storey structure that is both wind and solar powered. The breadth of his products ranges from toothbrushes to lemon juicer that looks like something from an old science fiction film.

His furniture designs are fluid and extremely inventive. He created the first polycarbonate chair called the La Marie Chair, and the popular translucent Louis Ghost Chair.

Many of his designs have been described as democratic as his designs are often mass-produced and very affordable and therefore available to the masses.

Johnny Chamaki

Johnny Chamaki is an award-winning Australian furniture designer. His works are inspired by the natural world.

He finds plants fascinating and draws inspiration from geographical locations, animals and historical figures.

His most recognised furniture design range is the Outlaw series. It was inspired by Ned Kelly and the folklore surrounding outlaw and his gang.

His furniture designs appear kinetic, from flowing white chaise lounges to his Spanish bull inspired chairs. Viva El Toro which have won him an international award and accolades.

Marc Newson

Marc Newson is an Australian furniture designer known for his futuristic and hypnotic furniture. E has worked all over the world in Tokyo, Paris and London.

He’s designed aircraft and cars, but it’s his furniture that really impresses. His designs set auction records, and he has work displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His designs are iconic, the Embryo chair, with it’s rounded edges is reminiscent of shapes that form in a Lava lamp. He was named in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2005.

Assa Ashuach

Assa Ashuach is a London-based product and furniture designer. He is known for finding new and surreal design aesthetics for everyday products and furniture.

Assa has exhibited his designs in museums around the world. He is innovated in the field of design; his OMI light was an early example of a 3D printed product that was distributed en masse.

His Osteon chair was not only impressively manufactured using 3D technology and artificial intelligence, but it is a sight to behold.

Jasper Morrison

Jasper Morrison is a British industrial and furniture designer. From a tram system to minimalistic furniture, he is an accomplished designer.

His furniture is both elegant and contemporary. Using plastics he has impressed many in his field and become a household name.

His affordable Air-Chair is simple and smart, making it the perfect piece to begin a collection. His Hi-pad and Low-pad chairs seem to combine inspirations from the past, present and future.
