By Gfl

Making your bathroom eco friendly and green is one of the best things you can do for the environment, and yourself.

There are many easy, affordable, and doable actions you can take to reduce your utility bills and make your bathroom green.

Below are a few of our favorite tips and tricks to green your bathroom.

1. Swap to eco-friendly toiletries

Toiletries are always a must – we gotta keep ourselves clean right?

As you know, many toiletries contain plastic, which pose a major threat to our natural environments.

Take plastic toothbrushes as an example. They take over 400 years to decompose. They remain in landfills, releasing gases like methane.

By swapping to eco-friendly toiletries you can reduce your waste and carbon footprint.

Eco-Friendly Toiletries Checklist

Bamboo toothbrush – The Other Straw offers a bamboo toothbrush that comes with a detachable brush head.

Their bamboo toothbrush takes sustainability a step further with their replaceable head. After 3 months, just swap the head for a new one instead of purchasing an entire new toothbrush.

Natural or homemade toothpaste – local pharmacies stock a variety of natural, climate-friendly toothpaste options. Or, if you are up for it, try making your own!

Organic coconut oil – try swapping your bottled moisturiser for organic coconut oil. Your skin and planet will thank you.

Coconut bowl- use a natural coconut bowl to store all your loose bits in the bathroom.

Menstrual cup – a sustainable alternative for the ladies.

Shampoo bar – stop buying plastic shampoo bottles and try a shampoo bar.

Soap bar – again, if you are using plastic bottles, try swapping for a soap bar instead.

Here there are some other ideas for eco toiletries to give as gifts.

A lot of research exists that shows the health and environmental impact of harsh cleaning products. If you have pets or children in the house, we recommend avoiding these hazardous cleaning products.

Cleaning with natural products is a simple action you can take to better your health and the planet. Whilst many natural and organic cleaning products can be more expensive, you can also consider making your own.

Here is an easy, all-purpose, all-natural disinfectant to green your bathroom.

Natural DIY disinfectant for bathroom:

Grab an empty spray bottle and add 2 cups of warm water, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and 10 drops each of any essential oil (eucalyptus oil works wonders).

You can use this to clean your surfaces, bathtub, shower and floors. Avoid using it on glass as it may streak.

3. Use sustainably-made toilet paper

Toilet paper can be bad for the environment as it is a disposable product. Depending on how it is sourced and manufactured can heighten this impact.

Consider swapping to recycled or sustainably made toilet paper.

There are many companies such as Who Gives A Crap who offers toilet paper made from 100% recycled sources.

Good for your bum, good for the planet.

4. Change your lightbulbs

Switching to LEDs is one of the simplest and easiest ways to reduce your energy bill and waste footprint.

It is estimated that LED bulbs consume 80 percent less energy than traditional bulbs. In addition, they last 25 times longer. Change up your light bulks, the planet will thank you!

5. Add some plants

Plants

Make your bathroom green with some fresh indoor plants.

Besides from helping transform your bathroom into a green space, bathroom plants offer plenty of benefits.

Firstly, they are beneficial to your health. They are able to improve air quality and also absorb moisture in the air to avoid any bacteria evolving.

Secondly, having a plant in your bathroom can also help boost your mood. Looking at your plant in the morning has been found to promote emotional stability to provide a mood booster.
