4 Ways to Make Your Garage Fireproof

By Gfl

Something that many people do not want to think about is the risk of a fire in the garage. However, this is something incredibly important to think about. Thankfully, it is pretty easy to make sure that your garage is as fireproof as possible. By clearing out the interior, getting the right garage doors and simply making sure that fire hazards are stored properly, you can drastically reduce the risk of a fire happening and spreading to other parts of your property.

1. Remove the Flammable Liquids

It goes without saying that most flammable things should be removed, put out of reach of pets and kids, and stored properly. If there are flammable liquids that you don’t use anymore, you should dispose of them properly. If the flammable liquids are something that you use often, such as fuel for the grill, then you need to think about ways to store them properly — preferably not in a dusty corner of your garage. The best solution to this problem is storing flammable liquids in a separate shed entirely, which will prevent power tools and lighters from becoming the spark of a raging fire.

2. Make Sure That the Wiring Is Safe

Additionally, while you want to make sure that the interior, exterior, and garage doors are all fireproof and safe from flammable objects, you need to think about what else can be hazardous. In many cases, fires start from faulty wiring causing sparks. Every so often, you should get in touch with an electrician and have the wiring checked out. This will minimise the risks of a fire breaking out inside the garage, which is something that everyone can be truly grateful for. With this being said, you should also think about having that same electrician look at the outlets as well as these can be equally as dangerous as faulty wiring if there is something wrong with them. Also, there should be one appliance per outlet, and you shouldn’t leave things charging on an extension cord.

3. Establish Safe Habits

Many people have hobbies that they practice in their garages. It could be woodworking, or it could be welding. No matter what kind of hobby you enjoy doing, you need to make sure that you are safe while doing it. This includes making sure that you have the right safety gear, equipment, and protection. The hobby should be practiced in a safe space where there is minimal risk of sparks creating a fire. As long as you be sure to establish these safe habits, you should be fine to continue your hobbies even during peak fire seasons.

4. Adding Fireproof Features

Ultimately, the best thing you can do to fireproof your garage is to make sure that you add as many fireproof features as possible. The garage doors? They should be made from a fireproof material such as metal. The walls of the garage? These should be made from a fireproof material and not wood. The same applies to the ceiling, flooring, and every other part of the garage. It should all be fireproof, which will drastically reduce the risk of a fire causing major damage to the garage.

By following all of these steps, you can make sure that your garage is not only comfortable to work in but as safe as possible as well.
