Festivals and Fireworks

Every day is festival day during the summer months in Japan. You will find all manner of fun, traditional festivals and parades in Tokyo. Locals don traditional Japanese attire and celebrate the culture and history that make this city one of the best on Earth. Summer Sonic is a yearly music festival held in Chiba near Tokyo, with international acts on the bill every year.

The Sumida River Fireworks happen on the last Saturday of July. In August, head to Miyajima Island and its fantastic light show illuminating the famous Torii Gate. The Toya Onsen in Hokkaido hosts its lakeshore fireworks nearly every night all throughout the season. These are just a few examples and smaller fireworks displays are held in several other places all summer long.

Delectable Food and Beer Gardens

Food is art in Tokyo, and you will find not only the very best sushi and sashimi in the world, but since Tokyo is a truly cosmopolitan city, all sorts of cuisine can be easily found. Take a literal journey around the world with your palette! Not only is the food delicious, the Japanese pride themselves in exquisite food presentation (that’s where the art comes in.) The portions will leave you satisfied but never overfed, and ready to sample the next delicious dish that comes along. The yakitori (skewered meat) offered by street vendors is a must-try.

Summer is beer season in Tokyo, and you will find a number of locations where beer gardens adopt the delightful tradition of nomihodai, or “all-you-can-drink” for one set price.

Climb Mount Fuji

The glorious mountain looms over the city on a clear day, enticing people to leave the heat of the city and explore her cooler environs. Besides a camera, make sure you have lots of batteries and a tripod in your photography bag. There are several routes to take from central Tokyo to Mount Fuji. The most popular way is to take the Fuji Subaru Line 5th station. Public transport is the preferred method of getting around for locals and visitors alike. The climbing season starts in July – tackle such spots as the Japan Alps, Kamikochi and the Kii Peninsula.
