3 Tips for Creating a Low-maintenance Garden

By Gfl

Creating a beautiful garden does not have to be expensive which is something that most of us would assume. It also doesn’t have to be high-maintenance where you need to spend a lot of your free time pruning and watering it when you can spend it more other ways like taking a run, walking your dog, or simply relaxing in your home with your family. You can still keep a garden without all the fuss and keep it low-maintenance.

Here are three tips for creating a low maintenance garden.

1. Have more plants that can survive long periods without water

If one of your goals is conserving more water as you keep a beautiful garden, try to have more plants such as low-water perennials since they can survive even without water for a long time. Moreover, they are not very much sensitive to heat which makes them a good plant to have if you do not have enough time to spare. Some examples of these plants are coneflower, succulents, salvia, Black-eyed Susan and more. While some of these may not be available in your area, make sure to do prior research on the plants available in your area that you can include in your garden. That way, the plants that you are going to have can adapt to your environment and weather.

2. Do a vertical garden instead

Keeping a vertical garden has a lot of benefits. If you have less space and do not have enough space on your lawn, maintaining a vertical garden would be the best solution. Make sure to build it through using only the best and high-quality materials like in ColourFence. The best thing about doing a vertical garden as well is that you can conserve more water because as you water one plant, it will drain on the others making watering a lot more simple for you. You will spend less time watering, and you will also spend less on your water bills! It’s a win-win situation. Moreover, it also cuts down the possibility of having a lot of bugs so you won’t be spending a lot of time getting rid of your garden with so many pests that you don’t want.

3. Do not forget the power of mulch

One of the keys to a low-maintenance garden is mulch. Besides having your own compost, this is something you should give importance to. This is because mulch helps plants retain water. In order to conserve moisture on your soil and help balance the shift of temperature, make sure to have mulches on your garden beds. Preferably, the materials to have for mulching are compost and dairy manure. This way, you are feeding your soil instead of your plants which is a good way to go since you will have a thriving plant when your soil is healthy. This is a best practice for sustainable gardening. By doing this, you make your garden beautiful and abundant. But most important of all, it is low-maintenance.
