From sea to shining sea, America boasts a proud and storied food culture. With so many unique regions and people, the country is a true melting pot of flavors. Here are three states to put on your travel bucket list in order to immerse yourself in the nation's diverse food culture.
California
It only makes sense that a state as diverse as California would also feature an incredible variety of cuisines. They have an incredible assortment of fresh seafood options, ranging from clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl in the Bay Area to a variety of fresh fish in Southern California. The state's large Hispanic population contributes to its amazing authentic Mexican food. Fish tacos are a staple in San Diego, combining both seafood and Mexican influences. California also enjoys a myriad of authentic Asian cuisines, especially in the Northern part of the state. Of course, no trip to California is complete without trying the cult-favorite burgers at In-N-Out Burger.
Alabama
Alabama is known for its southern-style food, including favorites such as fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, fried chicken, and collard greens. The food in Alabama is comfort food at its best. This food will stick to your ribs and feed your soul with its goodness. In addition to all of the southern food favorites, you will find an amazing array of fresh seafood options. Be sure to try the fried oysters, plump shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico and delicious crawfish. Because of its proximity to Louisiana, the state's food also features a Creole influence.
Hawaii
The spirit of aloha is alive and well with the diverse food selections of Hawaii. This chain of islands is more than just its traditional ham dishes and mai tai drinks. The islands feature a number of distinctive options, including poke bowls, ahi tuna, kalua pig and poi fish. Start your day with a bowl of fresh pineapple and papaya and finish it with a cone of Hawaiian shaved ice. Because the islands are so popular with Asian tourists, Hawaii caters to this population with an amazing array of authentic restaurants featuring the explosion of flavors from the Pacific Rim.
Whether you are a foodie or simply enjoy a tasty meal, all three of these states will satisfy any appetite. You will experience the true vibe of each state if you are intentional about indulging in its most popular foods.
