WhatsApp was founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton.WhatsApp joined Facebook in 2014, but continues to operate as a separate app with a laser focus on building a messaging service that works fast and reliably anywhere in the world.WhatsApp started as an alternative to SMS. Whatsapp now supports sending and receiving a variety of media including text, photos, videos, documents, and location, as well as voice calls. Whatsapp messages and calls are secured with end-to-end encryption, meaning that no third party including WhatsApp can read or to them. Whatsapp has a customer base of 1 billion people in over 180 countries.[55][56] It is used to send personalised promotional messages to individual customers. It has plenty of advantages over SMS that includes ability to track how Message Broadcast Performs using blue tick option in Whatsapp. It allows sending messages to Do Not Disturb(DND) customers. Whatsapp is also used to send a series of bulk messages to their targeted customers using broadcast option. Companies started using this to a large extent because it is a cost effective promotional option and quick to spread a message. Still, Whatsapp doesn’t allow businesses to place ads in their app.[57]

As social media usage has become increasingly widespread, social media has to a large extent come to be subjected to commercialization by marketing companies and advertising agencies.[136] Christofer Laurell, a digital marketing researcher, suggested that the social media landscape currently consists of three types of places because of this development: consumer-dominated places, professionally dominated places and places undergoing commercialization.[137] As social media becomes commercialized, this process have been shown to create novel forms of value networks stretching between consumer and producer[138] in which a combination of personal, private and commercial contents are created.[139] The commercial development of social media has been criticized as the actions of consumers in these settings has become increasingly value-creating, for example when consumers contribute to the marketing and branding of specific products by posting positive reviews. As such, value-creating activities also increase the value of a specific product, which could, according to the marketing professors Bernad Cova and Daniele Dalli, lead to what they refer to as “double exploitation”.[140] Companies are getting consumers to create content for the companies’ websites for which the consumers are not paid.

Howard. Good point about the online mention. You are right in that digital marketing does extend beyond connections to the Internet, especially re: mobile marketing. We’re also on the same page that digital marketing definitely isn’t a portion of Internet marketing but rather an entirely difference concept altogether.

It can be easy for Americans to forget, but SMS is a finite commodity in much of the world, where unlimited texting plans are nonexistent or prohibitively expensive. For people in those areas, WhatsApp — which offered a fast and reliable SMS replacement — was life-changing. It’s no surprise it topped the App Store charts in dozens of countries within in its first year, even after its founders shifted from a free to a paid app. (It eventually became one of the most-downloaded U.S. apps as well.)

Kik – Just like internetlovingteen said, it’s rated 17+ for a reason. It’s absolutely not for kids. WhatsApp – Heard of it, but never used it. Group Me – Never heard of it. Instagram – Relatively safe, however, it does have some explicit content. Tumblr – There’s some pornographic content on it, but you can search for certain things you like, so it’s relatively safe if you don’t wander into the explicit sections of it. Twitter – Relatively safe as long as you set it to private. Has some swearing. Musical.ly – Relatively safe, however, some songs have swearing and/or explicit content. YouNow – Never heard of it. Periscope – Heard of it, but never used it. Live.ly – Never heard of it. Burn Note – Never heard of it. Snapchat – A bit difficult to use and can potentially have explicit content. Would not recommend for kids. Whisper – Can potentially have NSFW content and things like suicide, self-harm, and drugs. Not for kids. Also rated 17+ for a reason. Yik Yak – Heard of it, but never used it. MeetMe – Not for kids. Omegle – Not for kids. Tinder – Can have explicit and sexual content. It’s generally used for hook-ups instead of long-term dating relationships. Do not let kids on this app.

Of course, review sites, such as Yelp, also help small businesses to build their reputation beyond just brand visibility. Positive customer peer reviews help to influence new prospects to purchase goods and services more than company advertising.[28]

The 2008 US presidential campaign had a huge presence on social networking sites. Barack Obama, a virtually unknown Democratic candidate, utilized 15 different social media websites to form relationships with the millions of American citizens who utilize those networks. His social networking profile pages were constantly being updated and interacting with followers. By the end of his campaign, Obama had 5 million social media network supporters (2.5 million on Facebook and 115,000 on Twitter). The use of social networking sites in his marketing campaign gave Barack Obama’s campaign access to e-mail addresses, as posted on social network profile pages. This allowed the Democratic Party to launch e-mail campaigns asking for votes and campaign donations.[26]
