27th MILO Little Olympics NCR Leg set to kick off in Marikina City
Manila, Philippines, 12 August 2014 – Leading beverage brand MILO once again welcomes competitive student-athletes in displaying their winning energy in the 27th MILO Little Olympics. It recently concluded its Visayas leg, with University of San Carlos at the top of the ranks for both elementary and secondary divisions. Now, the stage is set for the competition’s NCR leg on August 22 to 24, 30 to 31 at the Marikina Sports Complex.
The MILO Little Olympics emphasizes MILO’s unwavering commitment in helping the country find the next generation of sports heroes by seeking to develop not only athletic skills but mental discipline in student-athletes as well, through its roster of 13 sporting events, namely Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Football, Gymnastics, Lawn Tennis, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Volleyball, Sepak Takraw and Scrabble.
“As part of our endeavor to build a nation of champions, we are proud to say that the MILO Little Olympics is able to contribute tremendously to the discovery and progress of local talent through organized sports activities that help children gain confidence, practice teamwork and imbibe values that stay with them for life,” de Vera states. “For 27 years, the MILO Little Olympics has helped us nurture ambition, and now, as we celebrate MILO’s 50th anniversary in the Philippines, we are making the MILO Little Olympics an even bigger and better platform for competitive sports.”
Among the enhancements made for the 2014 MILO Little Olympics are the electronic registration, insurance coverage for all athletes and the use of top of the line sports equipment. “This year, we have partnered with the leading sports equipment brands to provide the best equipment, similar to those that the Philippine national teams use,” said Robbie De Vera, MILO Sports Executive. “We aim to elevate the MLO experience for our student-athletes and ensure that they have the best tournament experience possible.”
MILO will also select the 50 Most Outstanding Athletes in the MILO Little Olympics and provide them with special prizes.
Under its One Child, One Sport (OCOS) program in partnership with the Department of Education, MILO reinforces its commitment to grassroots sports development for youth through the MILO Little Olympics. Together with the DepEd, MILO promotes an active and healthy lifestyle among aspiring young Filipino athletes.
Student-athletes will get a chance to showcase their athletic excellence, determination and drive in the national arena as the first step towards achieving greatness in international leagues like the Asian Youth Games, The Universiade as well as the SEA Games.
MILO is also committed to ensuring the safety and security of MLO participants across all regions. Comprehensive contingency measures and round the clock medical and security teams in each leg are deployed to provide immediate aid to participating student-athletes.
Last year, the 26th MILO Little Olympics commemorated its 5th National Finals at the Cebu City Sports Complex. Over 1,600 student-athletes competed in the grand finale. Team NCR bets dashed three-time champion Team Visayas’ hopes for a return trip to the throne by posting a 6-point difference to achieve an overall score of 615. Not to be overlooked, the athletes of the Visayan region also pulled an impressive 609 while the Luzon and Mindanao delegations were relegated to third and fourth place with 416 and 400 points, respectively. Team NCR took home the Perpetual Trophy once again as the National Champion.
“We are very excited for Team NCR’s berth in defending their crown as National Champions,” said Dr. Robert Calo, MILO Little Olympics Regional Organizer for NCR. “With over 800 schools participating, it will surely be a heated competition. Touted to make waves in this leg are Muntinlupa Itaas Elementary School, San Beda College, Rochpol and the Philippine College of Criminology. We are definitely looking forward to another thrilling season as the NCR prepares to defend its title and keep the MLO Perpetual Trophy.”
The MILO Little Olympics kicked off its 27th season with the first of 4 regional legs at the Cebu City Sports Complex for the Visayas eliminations. The competition commences in Mindanao on August 8 to 10, 16 to 17 (Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center), NCR on August 22 to 24, 30 to 31 (Marikina Sports Complex), and Luzon on September 5 to 7, 13 to 14 (Baguio City Athletic Bowl), before returning to Marikina for the National Finals on October 24 to 26.
