2021 Nissan Rogue Scores Just 2 Stars in NHTSA Crash Test

Safety in general and accident safety in particular are crucial factors for cars. They are particularly important if the vehicle in question is used to transport a family, for example in a minivan or an SUV.

In particular, we're talking about the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) official crash test, which the Rogue only scored two out of five stars for in 2021, according to an initial report by The Car Connection. This is really bad for a new car. Overall, the Rogue got an average score of four stars, which is pretty good, but why is the passenger score so bad?

We don't know for sure, but based on Nissan's change to passenger restraint systems in vehicles built after Jan 28, we'd assume this had something to do with it. Nissan is quick to point out in a press release that its score reflects vehicles built at Nissan's Kyushu plant in Japan prior to Jan. 28. Most of the rogues for the United States are built at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee facility.

"Nissan is committed to vehicle safety and is pleased with the Nissan Rogue's four-star NCAP safety rating for 2021," a Nissan representative said in a statement. "All 2021 rogue vehicles fully meet federal safety standards."

NHTSA will retest the Rogue with its updated restraint systems and expects to release the results of the new tests in May. The other major crash testing agency - the Road Safety Insurance Institute - hasn't released any results for the 2021 rogue yet.
