You may feel stuck in a rut with your current home décor. If you are intimidated by the overwhelming sea of DIY projects, never fear there are many small changes you can make to completely transform your living space, and new paint colors could be the perfect starting point. For a long time, dark browns and blacks have dominated neutral décor. Now the tide is turning, and we are seeing a resurgence of “calm” along with bright and bold accents. If you are looking to update your design scheme for 2015, the following color trends will guide you in the right direction.
The New Neutrals
American home decorating has certainly been influenced by the bleak housing market and economic recession. According to Kelley Walters, writer for HGTV.com, our culture has sought more comforting neutrals and warm tones as a response to turbulent times. Camels and soft beige are a staple in many homes, but hottest color of the moment just may be gray. From rich, deep shades to softer hues, gray is bringing a new sophistication to neutral palettes. Many accent colors perfectly complement its rich look, making your design possibilities endless.
The Bold Accent Color
Traditional neutrals may be current, but there is a growing trend of bold, fun accent walls and accent pieces. For example, bold red is often incorporated with black and white schemes. Monaco Blue has also surfaced as a hot color; it is bold but surprisingly versatile and neutral. Earthy greens are also making a splash among eco-enthusiasts and many more. Deep jades and even bright citrons can add the perfect pop of color, and bring a natural, earthy element to your space.
Cool Combos in 2015
From the Pantone Institute of Color to interior designers everywhere, it seems no one can stop talking about purple and green. However, purple is not just purple. Orchid, wine and African violet have all made an impact, but 2014 has seen a shift toward paler shades and “true purples.” Another popular combination is white and poppy. This combo is typically seen in kitchens or rooms that you want to have a cheery, optimistic feel. To keep with a theme of whimsy, try stenciling parts of your walls, either with inspirational messages or meaningful pictures.
For many DIY beginners, figuring out if your chosen paint colors will coordinate with your other décor can leave you drowning in self-doubt. The best thing to do is choose one piece in the room to be your focal point, and base your color scheme on that. It could be anything from a favorite painting to a unique coffee table. It is also important to find a home improvement store that allows you to take paint samples home and try them out before you commit. Once you have your plan in place and your perfect colors chosen, it won’t be long before you and your home are reinvigorated and totally transformed.
