Young Adult Drama:

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

This book has gotten a lot of notoriety and been featured on a lot of ‘Top 10 of 2012′ lists but we didn’t feel right about not featuring it here too. This books connects you with characters that are so deep that you feel like they’re your closest friends and twists your heart for their pain. And on top of it all, just when you think it can’t get sadder, he finds away to make you laugh. We can’t recommend this one enough.

SciFi/Horror

Breed by Chase Novak

This is one you read with the lights on. I’ve never been so creeped out by a book. I can be a hard person to scare when it comes to books even though in movies I’m a total baby. He’s realistic which makes it that much more freaky: it’s not so out-of-this-world that it loses it’s ability to hold you. Warning: this is also one of the grossest books I’ve ever read. That said, I would still say it’s for any horror fan to enjoy.

Young Adult Dystopian:

Pandemonium (Delirium #2) by Lauren Oliver

9593911
This is one that we both read. Justine read Delirium first and begged Amanda for months to get into the series. This is a series that takes a rough and harsh subject and writes it poetically. Delirium and Pandemonium are about love but the story is gritty. Oliver is very committed to the storyline and makes tough decisions about the characters that stay true to the spirit of the book. This is a good series to start because the third book is coming out March 5th so read the first two now!

Steampunk:

The Friday Society by Adrienne Kress

Easy by Tamara Webber

The “New Adult” category got really big this year and Easy was one of the most popular releases. We wanted to include this because there was so much about this book thats noteworthy. The characters come through really strong, and so does the message concerning rape. I loved that the main character was empowered and didn’t become a helpless victim. If you are looking for a great contemporary to start, I would check this one out. P.S. Its intended for readers 17 and older.

Young Adult Sci-Fi

Origin by Jessica Khoury

13455112

This was one of the ARCs we received at SDCC, I was hesitant to start it as I’ve never been a huge fan of Sci-fi. I have to say this book made me a fan of this genre. Jessica Khoury did an amazing job making fantasy feel so real and possible. The main character, Pia, was so genuine and I couldn’t help but become absorbed in her story. Her story to find independence and love will leave you breathless.

Nonfiction:

Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan

brain on fire susannah cahalan

This book is a must-read for anyone interested or working in the psychology or neurological field. I’m just a layperson and I loved it. Read my review for more information about what this book is about and please check it out. I can’t talk this one highly enough. It was so interesting and kept me pulled in the entire time.

Young Adult Paranormal Romance:

Black City by Elizabeth Richards

2012 Roundup: Our Favorites

I cannot rave about this book enough, it has vampires, in a dystopian world, and a very fierce love story. I was overwhelmed with how well the story moved and couldn’t put it down. I ended up rereading it because I read it w few months before the blog tour, and I enjoyed it even more the second time. Elizabeth Richards did a outstanding job merging the paranormal world with the dystopian one. The romance takes a center stage and you will will gush about the chemistry. Book two, Phoenix is due out in June 2013, so its a great series to start off in the New Year.
