2012 NHL DRAFT: Limited One-game Scouting Report for Alex Galchenyuk

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73
Left game early in second period with injury
Alex Galchenyuk is a 6'2", 205 lbs left-handed center playing for the Sarnia Sting. He was injured for most of this season, playing his first game of the entire 2011-12 season on March 14th. Galchenyuk is a smooth-skater with impressive puck-skills, and was impressive in the OHL as a 17-year-old.
This scouting report is from a 3-2 loss to the London Knights on March 16th, 2012. Keep in mind that this is a one-game scouting report from a game that saw Galchenyuk leave early in the second period with an injury. The injury was unrelated to his knee, but limited our viewing of Galchenyuk to just over 4 minutes of ice-time.
OVERALL GRADE
Galchenyuk had a below-average overall grade of 60. His events per-minute played total was quite high at 4.94, but his inability to make plays in the offensive-zone hurt his overall grade. His best work was done in the neutral-zone.

OVERALL RISK/REWARD
Thanks to his work in the neutral-zone, Galchenyuk had a solid overall risk/reward rating of 1.48, and an overall ratio of 1.86 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Keep in mind, the viewing was extremely limited. As such, this is simply meant as a snap-shot of Galchenyuk's performance during this one-game.

OFFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD
Galchenyuk struggled making plays in the o-zone. He produced a negative offensive-zone risk/reward rating of -0.25, and an o-zone ratio of .80 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful plays. Expressed differently, this shows that Galchenyuk made more unsuccessful plays than successful plays in the offensive-zone during the game scouted.
He lost his only puck-battle, and recovered 1 loose-puck. He did not get a shot on net, and was successful with only 1 of his 3 pass-attempts.

DEFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD
Galchenyuk had a low defensive-zone risk/reward rating of 0.25, but a solid ratio of 2 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful plays. His ratio is stronger than his rating because of a limited amount of d-zone events. His d-zone events are unusually low when we consider that he was playing center during the game. He recovered 2 loose-pucks in the defensive-zone.

NEUTRAL-ZONE RISK/REWARD
Galchenyuk can carry the puck, and his neutral-zone numbers reflect just that. He had an impressive n-zone risk/reward of 1.48, and a phenomenal neutral-zone ratio of 7 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play.
He recovered 2 loose-pucks, and completed both of his neutral-zone pass-attempts. His only failed neutral-zone event was a lost race for a loose-puck.
