Now that the summer has passed, and a lot of my 2016 checklist has opened, here’s a look at the 20 films I’m looking forward to in the last part of the year.
1) Sully- September 9th
My next “anticipated” movie is the story of The Miracle On The Hudson, starring Tom Hanks, and directed by Clint Eastwood. It’s a strong combination, and I’m excited to see what those two can do together.
2) The Magnificent Seven- September 23rd
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt headline a remake from Antoine Fuqua. It won’t win any Oscars, but it looks like a lot of fun.
3) Deepwater Horizon- September 30th
Mark Wahlberg stars in the true life event of the oil rig disaster, and the heroes that fought to stay alive that day.
4) Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children- September 30th
Tim Burton directs this book that is a little like X-Men, but if Tim Burton had written X-Men. Hopefully it won’t be like Cirque Du Freak.
5) The Birth of A Nation- October 7th
Nate Parker’s buzzy biopic is destined to be an Oscar nominee. I’m ready to see what all the hype is about.
6) The Girl On The Train- October 7th
Emily Blunt stars in the film adaptation of the bestselling novel that had everyone talking. The next Gone Girl?
7) Desertio- October 14th
Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan star, and Jonas Cuaron directs. It looks intense, and resonates with our political landscape today.
8) Jack Reacher: Never Go Back- October 21st
The first film was a surprise for me, so I’m on board for the sequel. I think the trailer looks good, and this should be a solid hit.
9) Doctor Strange- November 4th
I’m on board for pretty much any Marvel movie, and I’m excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch in the role. I think he’ll do great.
10) Loving- November 4th
Another strong Oscar contender with a lot of buzz, also based on a true story.
11) Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk- November 11th
Ang Lee directs a war drama. The previews got me a bit excited, and I think this has awards potential.
12) Fantastic Beasts and Where To Fin Them- November 18th
Because we all deeply miss the Harry Potter films.
13) Moana- November 23rd
I just want to hear the songs written by Lin Manuel Miranda. I’m hoping this is at least as entertaining as Frozen.
14) Office Christmas Party- December 9th
Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman head up a funny cast that makes me hope this film is comedy gold.
15) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story- December 16th
Of course.
16) Fences- December 16th
A filmed adaptation of the play, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis acting their faces off. This should be good.
17) Passengers- December 21st
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. I know very little about the film, but I’m excited about the concept and the talent.
18) Sing- December 21st
Seems a little late for a cartoon American Idol themed movie, but I thought the trailer was cute, and the team behind it made Despicable Me, so…
19) Patriots Day- December 21st
Mark Wahlberg heads up a Peter Berg directed film. Haven’t seen a trailer for this, but I’m excited because of the talent involved.
20) Why Him?- December 25th
James Franco and Bryan Cranston star, and I thought the trailer was funny, so it cracked my top 20.
