‘1883’: Will It Be Coming To Netflix? Here Is What You Want

Taylor Sheridan has returned with another hit Western drama series, but will the new 1883 season be available on Netflix anywhere? It’s impossible in the United States, and exceedingly improbable on a global scale. As you may be aware, 1883 is a precursor to the hugely successful Yellowstone series (not available on Netflix anywhere). Sam Elliot, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Isabel May, LaMonica Garret, and Marc Rissmann feature in the prequel, which was directed by Taylor Sheridan.

The series tells the story of the Dutton family and how they came to control the ranch that is featured heavily in the Yellowstone series’ mothership. It’s also not the only Yellowstone spin-off in the works. 6666, a new series from Paramount Network, is also anticipated to win a full-season order.

Why isn’t 1883 available on Netflix in the US?

While the streaming rights for Yellowstone are a little more tricky, the situation for 1883 is much more straightforward. Yellowstone is a Paramount Network series that was accidentally leased out to NBC Universal’s Peacock. There will be no licensing to Peacock or Netflix for 1883; instead, the series will be one of Paramount+’s marquee shows. As a result, the series will only be accessible on Paramount+, and while it may ultimately be offered on VOD platforms, we can count out Netflix.

Will 1883 be available on Netflix in other countries?

Although it is getting increasingly unusual, ViacomCBS still chooses to license select titles to Netflix overseas. ViacomCBS recently went into tremendous pains to prevent one of its other Paramount+ signature series from being available on Netflix abroad. We’re talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which was resurrected with all prior seasons stripped away.

In the interim, we can nearly ensure that the program will either be kept back for the international launch of Paramount+ (which will be branded something different in some places) or sold to just broadcast networks.

We haven’t heard of any plans to license 1883, so you’ll have to look for other options.

Despite the success and popularity of episodes like 1883 and Yellowstone, Netflix hasn’t invested substantially in the genre, at least on the TV side. The Harder They Fall and The Power of the Dog are two major Westerns that Netflix released in 2021.

If you haven’t already, we recommend watching Longmire on Netflix (which unfortunately ended and will not be renewed, despite some claims), as well as The Ranch. The series is in a different genre, but it does include Sam Elliot, who is wonderful. Frontier, starring Jason Mamoa, is another strong contender.
