Another plus of the resort village: the historic center of Zermatt is car-free and can only be reached by train.
Within Zermatt, free electric buses run, and various gondolas take visitors to picturesque Matterhorn viewpoints in the surrounding nature.
After a scenic 30-minute train ride from Zermatt, you reach the viewing platform on the 3100m Gornergrat, from which you can admire not only the Matterhorn but a total of 29 other four-thousand-meter peaks as well as the Gorner Glacier.
With approx. 12km it is the third-largest glacier in the Alps.
