Warning: this post contains spoilers for the first season of 13 Reasons Why
Despite courting controversy due to its subject matter and graphic depictions of rape and suicide, Netflix’s series 13 Reasons Why has been renewed for a second season. According to Deadline, the streaming network was ready to order another 13 episodes of the series, set to premiere in 2018, last week but didn’t make the official announcement until Monday. In a statement, the network said the upcoming season “picks up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.”
The network is excited about the renewal. A post on the show’s Twitter feed on Sunday declared, “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.” Executive producer Selena Gomez shared the same message on Instagram.

The series finale did leave viewers with some unanswered questions, which didn’t stop the wild theories from circulating. One of which involves Hannah’s creepy stalker/photographer Tyler (played by Devin Druid). In episode 13, we see his secret collection of weapons. Later, in his photography studio, we see he has pictures displayed of all of the students who bullied him – including Clay. As you may recall, Clay (Dylan Minnette) spread a naked photo of Tyler around the campus, causing him to be (further) ridiculed by his classmates. Will Tyler seek revenge in season 2?
There’s also the last episode revelation that Alex shot himself. Fans are theorizing that he was shot by Tyler – I mean, he’s got an arsenal of weapons handy. Miles Heizer, who plays Alex, has seemingly shut that theory down. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said:
“It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah, because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season,” he says. And just because he may have attempted suicide, Heizer says that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily out of the picture. “That’s another subject that’s very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I’m sure that will bring a crazy set of issues. It would be interesting to go into that.”

Although it was often, tough to sit through, I am looking forward to a second season of this show. I’ve grown fond of the actors. And, on a lighter note, the cast members showed up at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night. Katherine, Dylan and Miles joined the rest of the cast to present the award for Show of the Year to another show with a great young cast, Netflix’s Stranger Things. I may not have cable, but I sure seem to be getting some great programming thanks to Netflix. (I still want to see RuPaul’s Drag Race though.)
