11 Spring Cleaning Hacks For The Bedroom

By Sharon Dalzell @Dalzells_Beds

With the clocks going forward in a couple of weeks and spring in the air, now’s the time to give your bedroom a good thorough deep clean to keep it fresh, hygienic and help breathe new life into your room.

People often ask how often should you clean your bedroom and change the bedsheets?

Obviously, it’s entirely up to you but you should aim to change your bed linen once a week and give the room a good dust every fortnight.

Giving your bedroom a good deep clean though takes time, so once or twice a month will help keep dust mites at bay and keep your bed and room smelling fresher and clean.

How To Clean Your Bedroom Like A Pro

  1. The simplest and easiest way to get your bedroom smelling fresher is to open the windows and let the air circulate. Not only will it banish any lingering odours from overnight but it’s great for airing your bed and mattress too.
  2. Secondly, with the windows still open turn back the bedclothes, or pop them in the wash, and leave the mattress to air for 20 minutes or so.
  3. After a quick wash, pop the duvets and pillows in the tumble dryer to fluff them up and even out the fillings. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s laundry care instructions.
  4. If you’ve time, a quick vacuum on and around the mattress area will remove any dust or debris that has gathered during the winter months.
  5. With the bed now stripped, check for any general wear and tear, discolouration, lumps or protruding springs from the mattress. A bed that’s seven years or older may not give you the correct comfort and support you need. Take the Bed MOT to see if it’s time for a new bed.
  6. If your mattress is non-turn, rotate it from top to bottom that way the fillings will be able to settle back into their natural position. If it’s turnable, flip it over as this will promote even wear and prolong its life.
  7. Weather permitting, you could even sponge down the mattress surface with light soapy water, making sure you don’t soak through and leave out to dry in the sun.
  8. Don’t forget to vacuum under the bed to remove dust particles and any scattered pieces of rubbish that have fallen between the mattress and bed. If the bed has drawers, empty the contents and give the storage compartments a good clean by simply vacuuming and wiping over.
  9. The divan base or bed frame could also be sponged or wiped down with a damp cloth or sponge, but make sure and check the manufacturer’s care instructions as some detergents may be too strong and could damage the upholstery.
  10. With the bed and mattress all fresh and clean it’s time to remake the bed. It’s worth thinking about investing in good quality mattress and pillow protectors as they will keep your mattress and pillows fresher and cleaner for longer and extend their lifespan.
  11. Now that the bed is clean and fresh, dust down and clean the bedroom furniture, surfaces and light switches. Vacuum or mop the floor surfaces to finish.
