We've seen great strides in fast charging over the past two years as smartphone makers like Huawei, BBK, and Xiaomi ramped up the adoption of wired and wireless charging. We've already seen wired charging peaking at ~ 120W in the past few months, but wireless charging solutions aren't far away either.
Now Leaker often has Digital Chat Station asserts that several manufacturers are targeting 100W wireless charging for phones launched in 2021. Read the following post.
That would be a huge leap from current wireless charging standards. We saw 40W wireless charging like the Oppo Ace 2 and Huawei P40 Pro Plus. Oppo also announced 65W wireless charging technology earlier this year, although we haven't seen it on a commercial device yet.
Even so, we wonder about the heat and battery degradation when switching to 100W wireless charging. Specifically, Oppo stated that its 125W wired charging solution degraded the battery to 80% capacity after 800 cycles, while its 65W wired solution dropped to 90% capacity after 800 cycles. Hopefully brands will adequately address this challenge with 100W wireless charging.
Another problem with this technology is compatibility with other Qi chargers. Oppo's 65W wireless charging solution uses significantly slower 10W or even 5W charges by default for other Qi-compatible phones.
