$1,000 Farm Car

Posted on the 08 March 2014 by Harvie

When coming to Australia on a working holiday visa (WHV), one of the first things you may decide is to buy yourself a camper van or a  “farm car”. I never even thought about getting a camper van, because aint nobody got time to use public showers and restrooms everyday, aint nobody!

I not so long ago bought a $1,000 “farm car” in the Gold Coast, what makes it a farm car other than me calling it a farm car? Absolutely nothing. It’s cheap, and gets me from my house to the farm. Farm car.

How to get yourself a $1,000 farm car?

A running car with Rego is going to cost anywhere from $900 upwards. Between $900-$1400 price range, the farm car will be a piece of sh1t, at least 15 years old, over 250km on the clock and if you’re lucky no dead body in the boot. If you are vigilant like me, you can get yourself a real gem however.

The car I got was for $1,000 Ford Falcon, it had all the paper work, the guy who we bought off had a business and everything looked legit. I believe we got a diamond in the rough with this car for the price.

Farm car in Australia

I don’t know much about cars, but the tires had good tread, the car was in good condition, engine ran smoothly and nothing was leaking. You never really know what you’re going to get when you pay $1,000 for a car, so you are taking a risk. All relevant paper work was their and the reasons for selling the car seemed genuine. For further tips of what to look for in a car check the Wiki how guide on how to check a used car.

When you see cars priced very low ($1,000<) with rego, you need to act fast, and by fast I mean check the car out and buy it within 1-2 hours of the adverting being posted. These cars don’t last on the market for long, unless the farm car is a total lemon, it will be sold the same time. Within 10 minutes of seeing the car on gum tree we called the guy and an hour later we bought it. If we would have slept on it and came back in the morning it would have been sold. ACT FAST!

It can be a tedious process to keep refreshing gum tree every 15 minutes but if you really want a cheap car, this is the best way to do it. Ideally being in a big city help also, finding a cheap farm car in a rural area is not going to be easy.
