The Albany Times-Union solicited reader thoughts on Trump’s 100-day mark. Here’s my submission:
In halcyon 2009, I wrote The Case for Rational Optimism. Impossible now.

No God ordained America’s democracy eternal. Nor even our remaining an orderly, peaceable, civilized society. Which can’t endure without a citizenry invested in its principles and ideals, with the social trust that underpins our communal institutions.
All that was fraying before Trump’s advent, and he’s a societal wrecking ball. “Make America Great Again” is a grotesque mockery — its true greatness being destroyed. Much of this looks irreversible.
Electing this criminal monster was insane. It’s said voters get the government they deserve. Yet the consequences here may be overly harsh. “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
