10 Things I Hate About You: 25th Anniversary- Julia Stiles, Heath ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Quick Take: I got this once during a sale in the Apple Store, because it had audio description, and it was on sale. I’m not remotely objective here. There’s no critical consensus. I was in high school when this came out, and my nostalgia is too strong. This is a desert island movie for me, easily qualifying with a totally view count somewhere between 10-15 times in my life. I own this on DVD, but sadly, despite the medium supporting multiple audio tracks, no one was thinking about accessibility being one. At least the track is good, and reminds me of the movie I love. Some of the cast would go on to bigger and better things, like Oscar winner Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Gabrielle Union, and David Krumholtz. Lost along the way were Andrew Keegan, who had already done some things, and Alex Mack’s Larisa Oleynik, who took her Nickelodeon fame to the big screen here, but not for lasting big screen success. Still, this is just an adaptation of another work, and like 1999’s Cruel intentions, the adaptation remained popular. there was a short lived TV show based on the movie, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this get a remake, or something else, like Cruel Intentions continues to find life. It is just William Shakespeare’s Taming Of The Shrew, but the cast, the smart approach to using high school as the setting, and a breakout performance from the late Ledger keep this a winning romantic comedy choice. For more, check out my video.
