10 Movies That Should Get Sequels
In a world where Hollywood is producing sequels galore, rebooting franchises and creating universes. I have decided to look back at the movies we have had that have remained stand-alone projects that deserve sequels. For the list not a single movie on the list will have a sequel, but some might have been rebooted in some shape or form. No book series that never got a sequel will make the list either. I will also be looking into why we never got one and potential things stopping us from getting one now.

Here are 10 Movies That Should Get Sequels
1 – Deep Rising
Stephen Sommers’ Deep Rising follows a group of hijackers looking to rob a luxury ocean liner, only to discover something much scarier on board. Everyone on board has vanished and now the crew must fight to survive. The movie finishes with three survivors John Finnegan, Trillian St James and Joey Pantucci blowing up the cruise liner and finding themselves on a desert island. Just when they are taking a breath, they hear a monster or creature storming through the jungle on the island. The movie ends there, leaving us wondering what was on the island.
This was one of the many movies that struggled to compete against Titanic in early 1998. It was originally planned to be an introduction to a King Kong reboot, but Godzilla’s poor performance stopped that from happening. Sommers moved on to The Mummy and then the movie found itself shelved. We could easily get the next chapter of this movie without needing to be attached to a more popular one. Unfortunately, the recent passing of Treat Williams stops Finnegan from returning, but with a sequel, we could easily go in the same direction Mad Max Fury Road did. By bringing in a younger cast to fit the era the original movie was set in.
2 – The Final Girls
Todd Strauss-Schulson’s The Final Girls is a comedy horror movie exploring the slasher genre. It follows the daughter of a horror icon that finds her friends transported into her big movie. They must work together to survive a slasher movie where the characters play into the 80s generic tropes. However, being able to reconnect with her mother becomes too tempting for her to want to stay. The movie ends with the friends escaping the killer and finding themselves recovering in a hospital. Then, we cut to the idea that we are entering the sequel.
Where the movie leaves us with a cliff hanger, the movie is perfectly ready for a sequel. It would need to continue to poke fun at the 1980s slasher genre and the need for sequels, bringing a much need for satire to the genre. With the right writers, we could have another treasure for the horror-comedy genre.
3 – Brightburn
David Yarovesky’s Brightburn brings a twisted origin story of a young boy reaching his teenage years. However, unlike many of the origin stories, we see a much darker side coming out, creating a threat to the world. The movie ends with him killing his human parents and the world facing his path of destruction. Elsewhere, we get to see dark versions of many of the popular superheroes that have been seen around the world.
With the potential of an open world filled with different supervillains causing chaos in the world. There are different origins for many of the characters we get hints of. Elsewhere, we could see the conspiracy theorists trying to uncover them and the government trying to cover it all up.
4 – Johnny Mnemonic
Robert Longo’s Johnny Mnemonic follows a man that can store data in his mind and is used as a courier for different gangs. His latest job sees him dealing with more data than ever before and facing a struggle to remain alive before delivering it. All while being chased down by the Yakuza.
This is a movie that could see a sequel come out with the next mission, despite the original being more of a warning about data in the future. We could easily see new methods for the data couriers to operate and Keanu is always good for a big action movie.
5 – Rampage
Brad Peyton’s Rampage sees a very thin adaptation of the video game being brought to life. It sees creatures from around the world being infected by something that makes them giant and causes mayhem. One of these animals George the gorilla has been getting tamed before the incident and becomes the only thing that can stop the other threats.
This puts us in a strange spot by the end, George has saved the day and defeated the monsters. However, you feel we could easily see other animals we didn’t see coming back into the fight, giving us a big series of monster-smashing movies.
6 – Van Helsing
Stephen Sommers makes a 2nd appearance on this list with his Van Helsing movie. It follows the legendary hunter tracking down Dracula in his latest play to destroy the world. However, along the way, he meets werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster and other creatures from the universal monster universe.
This creation had so much potential for us to get so many more movies. We could have seen more adventures from Van Helsing and been given a massive franchise. It is easily better than the attempted Dark Universe we recently saw fail quickly.
7 – No One Lives
Ryuhei Kitamura’s No One Lives follows a ruthless gang of highway killers who kidnap a seemingly wealthy couple. However, they have picked the wrong couple, as one turns out to be a sadistic controlling serial killer. He unleashes his traps and killing ability to pick them off one by one to collect what is his.
When this movie finishes, see the killer walking away, waiting for the chance to pick up his latest victim. He now believes she is ready to become his partner and we could see the pair work together on their latest hunt. Or they could face another group of criminals to show their new unity.
8 – Anna and the Apocalypse
John McPhail’s Anna and the Apocalypse sees a teenager about to leave school when she and her friends must deal with a sudden zombie outbreak. Where this is different to many others, is all singing all dancing side to the story. The movie sees Anna and a few friends escape the school and head off out of their city, but to where is the question?
We could easily pick up where Anna and her friends left off, We know they would be going to a bigger city or another location for safety. The songs and dancing could return and we could all have a blast with one of the most entertaining zombie movies ever.
9 – The Cabin in the Woods
Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods follows five friends visiting a remote cabin in the woods. However, once they unleash an evil, they must battle to survive. Meanwhile, beneath the cabin, a whole operation is going on to make sure the victims are picked off in a certain way. the movie ends when the friends decide to let the world end and a giant hand comes out to destroy the area.
While this doesn’t sound like a movie that could get a sequel, I am thinking more of a spin-off. We don’t know how much destruction is caused, potentially the end of the world. Although the movie does imply other locations have failed before, so there must be a way to stop the larger destruction. We could also see how one of the more successful operations is completed too.
10 – Attack the Block
Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block follows a London teenage gang fighting back against an alien invasion. The pitch-black monsters have come to Earth looking to devour anything and the kids are the only ones prepared to fight back. This movie is special because the monsters are the stuff of nightmares.
Attack the Block is the closest movie to having a sequel happen. There have been rumours for years now and it feels like a movie that could happen. We can explain the time jump and have even more nightmarish creations coming to the big screen.
So that has been 10 Movies That Should Get Sequels.
